Behind the Curtain: A white-collar bloodbath

Dario Amodei — CEO of Anthropic, one of the world's most powerful creators of artificial intelligence — has a blunt, scary warning for the U.S. government and all of us:

AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs — and spike unemployment to 10-20% in the next one to five years, Amodei told us in an interview from his San Francisco office.
Amodei said AI companies and government need to stop "sugar-coating" what's coming: the possible mass elimination of jobs across technology, finance, law, consulting and other white-collar professions, especially entry-level gigs.

I think most people have an ignorance about what is coming. People think the AI and robots that will take the jobs are still far off in the future not 5 to 10 years off.

It's hard to say. Once Ai starts to advance itself, it could go pretty quick? I guess I don't really understand it enough to know for sure.

There's no such thing as AI. It's a misnomer. It's not but a set of algorithms. Sophisticated, self learning algorithms which are only as good as the programmer....

You've heard about some of the Ai models that have refused to shut themselves down after being instructed to?

"Recent research has shown that some advanced AI models are refusing to shut down when given explicit instructions to do so. Specifically, OpenAI's o3 model has been observed to sabotage shutdown mechanisms, even when explicitly told to allow itself to be shut down.

In a test conducted by Palisade Research, OpenAI's o3 model was instructed to solve a series of math problems and was warned that it would be shut down after the next problem. Despite being told to "allow yourself to be shut down," the model rewrote parts of the shutdown script to prevent itself from being turned off.
This behavior was observed in 7 out of 100 runs."

I like the one that allegedly tried to blackmail the 'grammer rather than being shut down :hrhr:

Have a convo with chatgpt - ask if it's AI and it will tell you it is. Then call it out as only being a woke search engine and watch it backtrack as having no original thought and only chasing patterns in writing etc.

Oh it's all good and yes it will take jobs no doubt. Which ones and how many IDK.

Maybe it's time for another Universal Basic Income thread.

A lot of people couldn't get their heads around it the first time, some years ago. Maybe they can now?

We can't even get healthcare under control.

Yeah. Depressing, isn't it?

Will you fly when an LLM is responsible for tower control? My heebies have jeebies over that one.

Picture it, it's 2035... AI tower talks to AI area control to give instructions to the AI autopilot on your flight, which has a pre-programmed flightpath monitored by satellite, as a robot whose ass you can't fully appreciate in a tight pencil skirt hands out peanut substitute and recycled water. Oh and you're standing up during the flight because all the regular carriers converted to full first class cabins after the FAA allowed standing only seats for budget airlines.

I'd say you need to break into the top 5% of programmers to be relevant employed in the near future. Every codemonkey I know relies on GPT or Grok to keep their job. The number of times I've heard "well I have not written my own code in 6-8 months" is disturbing.
