The Kyiv Independent

QuoteEditor's note: This is a breaking story and is being updated.

An operation by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) using first-person-view (FPV) drones smuggled deep inside Russian and hidden inside trucks has hit 41 Russian heavy bombers at four airfields across the country, a source in the agency told the Kyiv Independent on June 1.

The operation — codenamed "Spider web" and a year-and-a-half in the planning — appears to have dealt a major blow to the aircraft Moscow uses to launch long-range missile attacks on Ukraine's cities.

"The SBU first transported FPV drones to Russia, and later, on the territory of the Russian Federation, the drones were hidden under the roofs of mobile wooden cabins, already placed on trucks," the source said.

"At the right moment, the roofs of the cabins were opened remotely, and the drones flew to hit Russian bombers."

The source said one of the airfields hit was the Belaya air base in Russia's Irkutsk Oblast, more than 4,000 kilometers from Ukraine.

Olenya air base in Russia's Murmansk Oblast, the Diaghilev airbase in Ryazan Oblast, Ivanovo airbase in Ivanovo Oblast were also targeted.

"Currently, more than 40 aircraft are known to have been hit, including the A-50, Tu-95 and Tu-22 M3," the source added.

This article says the drones were FPV drones (human controlled)
There are articles on X stating they were AI controlled and the entire attack was AI controlled.

Large trailers with drones stored in roof panels were parked near airfields and the drivers left.

At a set time the roof panel opened and the drones launched and attacked  aircraft at the airfields.

There are also reports that 6 trailers were used in the attacks and 2 were discovered and destroyed
before launching their drones

Further reports say the attacks in Murmansk originated in Finland. As Finland belongs to NATO, this opens a whole new can of worms.

Googling "Ukrainian attacks on Russian airfields" will yield articles from all the worlds major news agencies.

I didn't bother with any links from X because there is no way to know what's true.

This happened about 6 hours ago and Russia is already launching retaliatory strikes into Ukraine.

Who had autonomous attacks 4000km into enemy territory on their bingo card even 5 years ago??

We're getting a 2nd row seat at what warfare in the future looks like and just how effective this type actually is.

Hopefully our planners are taking EXTENSIVE notes.

and I'll bet the entire attack cost less that the training costs for one US fighter pilot.

The ROI on this attack is phenomenal!

$2 billion worth of Russian nuclear bombers destroyed for the price of 6 trailers and a couple of hundred small drones. There are also rumors of a Russian nuclear submarine burning in Murmansk.

Such an attack should only work once though.

The Russians have always counted on distance to protect their airfields.
Now they will be forced to build hardened aircraft shelters.

I have also heard reports they took out two key bridges.

Wait til the Chinese ship a swarm of drones against us that form their own mesh network that can't be jammed and too many for our archaic missile defense made for only several targets.
We can only hope the Chinese start by targeting congress. Would do us all a favor.

I've got to disagree with this.
Soldiers are only as good as their leadership.
To say Russian leadership is piss poor would be an upgrade.

both Ukraine and Russia have press gangs roaming the streets rounding up men from 16 yo's to 50+ who "volunteer"
for service.
It really is an ugly war.
The weekly casualty figures exceed US casualties from 20 years of the GWOT.

Human pride weighed you down so heavily that only divine humility could raise you up again. ~Augustine of Hippo

MIL-TFP-41

It is the future of war, drones. The cost of these FPV drones a few hundred dollars each. F-35? 100 million.
Breaks down to you can buy 200,000 drones for the cost of one airplane, and that doesn't count the maintenance cost on the airplane. 200,000 targets...you might be able to take a few of them out, there is no way you are going to hit all of them.
