Quote from: neurosis on June 07, 2025, 12:34 PMYOu do know that there are people who work two, sometimes three, jobs who still can't afford to pay their bills?

There's a difference in working 2 jobs at a fast food joint and working 2 "real" jobs.

Many people claiming they're "working 2 jobs and can't make ends meet" are working 2 menial jobs, generally at part-time.

I'd speculate many of those people are unemployable in many jobs for a multitude of reasons.

Short of those times when people run in to hard times through no fault of their own, people generally create their own problems.

There are some people who will never be able to work anything other than those jobs?

How much thought have you put in to those multitude of reasons?

I'm not defending lazyness because if we targeted that in to a narrow view of conversation then I would agree with you, and less likely, James.  :D

Quote from: neurosis on June 07, 2025, 12:50 PMYea... I mean. Do we really live to work, or work to live?

Is it better to work yourself to death until you have no quality of life left to enjoy?

Honest question.

I took the work myself to death route.  I'm only 55 so I have some time left to enjoy and still have a smidgen of quality of life left.

Those are life choices Dave.

Make stoopid choices when you're young and you'll spend a lifetime digging out of that hole.

Ask me how know...

When a guy decides to knock up 3 women and gets raked over the coals for child support and then decides that he's not going to pay so he works nothing jobs.

Then he complains he never got a break, whose fault is that?

When a woman has 3 baby daddies and dropped out of high-school and spends a lifetime on welfare, surviving at the edges of society,  whose fault is that?

I made some difficult things when I was young.  Those choices took me years to change my course.

People need to be held responsible for their choices and their mistakes.

When you choose to start your adult life behind the 8-ball it takes a while to straighten it out.

You're talking about things that I never brought up. I don't disagree with you on these.

Lord knows I've made some mistakes in my life that have set me back.  I think that I may have talked to you about some of them? I don't begrudge anyone for my own choices.

I've done a pretty good job of getting myself back on track, even though my struggle was more of being made an example of than a legit issue when it comes to our "system of justice".  :D   I'd like to tell that entire story at some point because it was incredible at how inept our legal system is.

I spent my entire younger life working ungodly hours for people who would never reword me for the hours worked. That's what I'm talking about.  I continued that until the man who owned the shop I work for now, died of cancer.  I had a bit of an epiphany at that point.

Ref the work-yourself-to-death....having got to the factory between 4.30 and 6am latest and leaving 6.30/7pm earliest and finishing early at 4pm on a saturday, and doing an early sunday morning to plan the week ahead, and in the evenings at home, quoting work or invoicing or tax return or reading eWC etc to learn Mcam, full on for most of the 12.5 years i had my place, I can confirm, that the work is ok, sometimes enjoyable, but what fukkered me up, was frustrations (mostly bus partner).
Yeh, it's the frustrations in life we have to remove....

Yea, the work to live or live to work is a relevant question.

We've been "groomed" to believe that we just work our lives away until we die. Who does that benefit? Most of the time, it's not us.

Some of us come out of it better than others, but it's not guaranteed and it's not all of us.

Does it ever get lonely up there on that throne?
Nobody here is up on a throne. We're just everyday Joe's workin', doing our thing.

Save the "work two, sometimes 3 jobs". Been there, done that. I did what it took to support my family, so my wife could stay at home... IN the People's Republik of Kommieforniastan .. on a beginner machinists wage.

So excuse me if I don't expect people to do what it takes to manage their situation.

Capitalism is amoral and the greatest economic system ever created.
The free market always balances out.
Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other economic system.

Healthcare, education and housing have lead inflation over the past 40 years in developed western economies but has gone nuts in USA. Those three things have outpaced earnings for all this time, and it's hippie baby boomers in all levels government jacking it up for future generations. This town needs an enema.

So how do you feel about trumps EO to equalize pharmaceutical pricing at the cheapest rate of developed countries.
