Does anyone have any experience with these things?

I live in a condo and cant exactly have a generator running during a power outage.  I've been thinking about getting a chest freezer but I live right next to a green belt and have several power outages a year. I'm looking for something that would at minimum, keep me from losing a bunch of food if the power went out for a day or two.

Some vehicles have a decent sized inverter in them. Check to see if you may have one or possibly install one big enough to run a freezer. An hour or two a day should keep everything solid and most cars are fairly quiet.

And in reality a decent chest freezer should be able to stay frozen for a day or two maybe longer as long as it stays shut. Don't keep opening it to check the contents. If you do get worried place a wired bbq meat thermometer in the freezer with the display outside to check it occasionally.

I personally can't justify that price for a box with a battery and inverter.

I agree that thing seems a little over priced.  The thing I like about it is that it can be charged with solar so it can be used for more than just a battery back up.  You could take it camping as well.

Neither of my vehicles have inverters in them.

You'd need to purchase 4 solar panels as well in order to have a chance to fully recharge it within a day unless you have perfect high intensity full sun(something that I doubt your area has). Then don't forget those cloudy/rainy days where you'll have zero ability to fully recharge.

IMO - emergency backup needs a much more reliable power source, shouldn't matter if it's to recharge it or fully run it.

This should get you through the power outages.

I think that the kid would cost me more than the battery backup.
