Allegedly YOU own your phone number now. You should be able to keep the number. I've had the same number since 1996-ish so I have no idea how exactly how it works.

See the problem is, My wife's mom was the account owner. She technically owned the numbers. She is now diseased. According to an ATT employee, we have no legal ownership of the numbers. We have been treading lightly in dealing with this because the last thing we want is for someone at ATT to trigger some sort of contract cancellation because MIL is diseased leaving us without service and losing our numbers before we can get a new account and numbers switched.

That detail may be irrelevant. The new cell company won't care. They want the business, they will do whatever it takes. And since your wife is technically "an" admin of the existing account, she should be able to open a new account and claim ownership of the numbers.

AT&T's job at this point is to keep you in fear. So far so good.

The problem is that the old account was through my MIL's work. Since none of us are employees at said employer, we don't qualify for their plan. We can't make any major changes without opening a new account that is a non-Walmart employee plan. We can open a new account, most likely keep the numbers, but we would lose the discount and grandfathered plan.

How much are you paying now for the 7 phones?
Seriously, check out GoogleFi or better yet contact them. I'd bet my left nut that they'd be way cheaper than anyone else out there right now.

I think we pay $40 per phone with unlimited calls, text, and data.

Looking at their plans, they have a 6 phone plan (6 seems to be max selectable). Their cheapest plan is $23 per phone with 30GB per person. Once someone goes over 30GB that phone gets a secondary data rate charge.

Their best plan is $40 per phone (6 phone plan) with 100GB per phone, mobile hotspot, international calling, etc...

It is probably 15 years old and we joined our family almost 10 years ago. The funny part is for the last 7-8 years we have paid the bill. We can show that all of those payments came out of my account, yet ATT still says I need to go through credit check/etc. to start a new account.

I'm ~$62/mo. Unlimited Data + Hot Spot. Over 10GB on Hot Spot speed is throttled.

Verizon.

That's actually not too bad.  Especially for Verizon. Is this a multi-phone plan?

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.
