The optics of this are really bad regardless of the circumstances

A Canadian citizen, Johnny Noviello, 49, died on June 23, 2025, while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Federal Detention Center in Miami, Florida. Noviello, who had been a lawful U.S. permanent resident since 1991, was detained pending deportation after a 2023 conviction in Florida for drug trafficking and racketeering, for which he served a 12-month prison sentence. ICE arrested him on May 15, 2025, citing removability due to his drug convictions. The cause of death remains under investigation, though ICE reported that medical staff attempted resuscitation after finding him unresponsive. Noviello had a history of epilepsy, and his family had ensured he had access to necessary medications. His death marks the tenth in ICE custody in 2025 and the fourth in Florida. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand stated that Canadian consular officials are urgently seeking more information from U.S. authorities regarding the incident. The case has intensified scrutiny over ICE detention conditions and added to tensions between Canada and the U.S. amid broader immigration enforcement policies.

45 people died in Los Angeles jails/prisons in 2023.

It happens sadly. Not ideal for sure.

So since we're about half-way through the year, it stands to reason another 10 will die in custody. Still more than HALF as much as Los Angeles.
