QuoteAt least two firefighters responding to a wildfire blaze in the Idaho Panhandle were killed by sniper fire, authorities said on Sunday.

"We're actively taking sniper fire as we speak. This is an active situation," Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said at a news conference. "We're taking rapid fire up there."

The attack happened at around 2 p.m. at Canfield Mountain outside the city of Coeur d'Alene in Kootenai County. Norris said multiple public safety agencies were responding to the scene in order to "neutralize this suspect."

Norris said the bodies of the two downed firefighters remained on the mountain. He said it was unclear exactly how many people had been hit or if there were multiple shooters. He said first responders were taking fire from modern, high-powered "sporting rifles."

"If these individuals are not neutralized quickly this is going to be likely a multi-day operation," Norris said.

Idaho Governor Brad Little confirmed the attack on Kootenai County Fire and Rescue in a statement on social media:

"Multiple heroic firefighters were attacked today while responding to a fire in North Idaho," Little said. "This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters. I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more." He said he and his wife Teresa "are heartbroken."

They found the shooter dead.. no further details available.
Don't know if he was a nutter survivalist, a right wing Nazi or a wanna be jihadi.
I would think a jihadi or a Nazi would want to go down swinging.

Saying now that the shooter started the fire... Maybe he had a bone to pick with the fire services? Wild story, cops expect to get shot at, but not firefighters.

Yes.. initial reports said the shooter started the fire and began sniping the firefighters as they showed up.
First reports said 9 dead 2 wounded. There is an audio recording on X of a firefighter calling it in. Rough stuff  :'(
I'm glad initial reports were wrong, but it seems odd  that they were that wrong.
Maybe it was a 12 man crew and nobody was checking in after the shotting started?

Just an aside observation, Idaho has to be the least talked about state in this country. At least in this neck of the woods.

Just don't go to northern Idaho if you pass a certain shade of brown.

That's probably where I'll move (if it's still affordable by then) when I retire. Maybe the Post Falls area. Not because of that brown thing though.  Because it's close to my g/f's family. :D

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

We used to have a member from Idaho. I think he went into his bunker during the Obama years and never came out.

Yes.. there are enclaves all over Idaho.
Some are people who just want to be left alone, some are right wing and a few are hard core Nazis.
Of course most of the info reaches us via a heavy left wing filter, so it's hard to know what the actual truth is.

I spend a few weeks in Idaho about every other summer.  Mostly south/ east Idaho.  pretty nice folks in those parts.  it is true that norther Idaho has a crap load of white power / weirdo camps and lot of people that just don't want to be found.

Grok:

Yes, Northern Idaho has a documented history of white supremacist activity, though the scale and influence have varied over time. The region gained notoriety in the 1970s when Richard Butler established the Aryan Nations, a neo-Nazi and white supremacist group, in Kootenai County near Hayden Lake. The group operated a 20-acre compound, hosting annual gatherings called the "Aryan Nations World Congress" and promoting a white ethnostate in the Pacific Northwest. Their activities included antisemitic propaganda, paramilitary training, and violent incidents, such as the 1998 assault on Victoria and Jason Keenan, which led to a $6.3 million lawsuit by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) that bankrupted the group and shut down the compound in 2000. The property was later turned into a peace park.

More recently, Northern Idaho has continued to attract white supremacist and far-right extremist groups. In 2018, the SPLC identified at least nine hate groups in the Spokane and Northern Idaho area, including Identity Evropa, Proud Boys, and America's Promise Ministries, driven partly by fears of demographic changes. In 2022, 31 members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front were arrested in Coeur d'Alene for allegedly planning to riot at a Pride event, highlighting ongoing activity. Additionally, individuals like Shaun Winkler, a former Aryan Nations associate, have attempted to establish new white supremacist compounds in the region, such as one in Bonner County in 2012. Posts on X and other reports also note the area's reputation as a haven for white supremacists, Christian nationalists, and neo-Nazis, with some local political figures showing ties to these ideologies

as I said.. what we hear comes with a heavy left wing filter.
The Southern Poverty Law Center labels Focus on the Family and Moms for Liberty as hate groups.
