I just started reading about Able Archer 83. 

It's pretty fascinating stuff.  I hadn't heard about this until recently and decided to look it up.

Was it a coincidence that the movie came out that same year?  That Reagan changed his tune when talking about Russia shortly after?

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I have vague memories of that incident. The Soviet Union was pretty certain that Nato was preparing a first strike because we had moved some nuclear missiles within striking distance of eastern Europe. The world is lucky the Soviet engineer that was on duty actually thought for himself instead of just blindly following orders or none of us might be here now.

I don't know if the movie came out before or after the real incident.

I figured that you would be happy that I posted something non political?

It really is a cool story and scary to know how close we came to a nuclear disaster. Both countries had enough nuclear power at the time to destroy each other 50 times over.

I think it took balls for the Soviet engineer to take the actions he did. If his gamble is wrong, his country is hit with a first strike nuclear attack. If he's right, he saves the world.

The FOIA requests for information on Able Archer 83 weren't filed until 2018.

It was only suspected until then.
