Trump fires BLS commissioner, raising concerns about economic data quality

WASHINGTON, Aug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump fired the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Friday after data showed weaker-than-expected employment growth in July and massive downward revisions to the prior two months' job counts.
Trump accused McEntarfer, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, of faking the jobs numbers. There is no evidence to back Trump's claims of data manipulation by the BLS, the statistical agency that compiles the closely watched employment report as well as consumer and producer price data.

It's an open secret that BLS data is garbage. It's consistently revised to a worse finding, months  after , but never revised to a better number

I can see if the actual number was 28,000 and she added a 0, or something like that, hey typos happen. But this... this was not that. This was incompetence or it was deliberate. Both of which are inexcusable, indefensible, and deserve termination and public ridicule.

But let's just say it was a typo for argument's sake... she didn't have the sense to have someone proofread it. That's almost worse than the other two.

Again, not looking for perfection in those numbers. They ARE going to fluctuate and need refinement because there's a lot of reports to sift through and they often change for one reason or another.

I doubt there's ever been a President who didn't have one, two, or more down job reports. Not a big deal if it doesn't go on long term.

I doubt there's ever been a President who fired the head of the reporting agency though. That's just plain messed up.

Now he's going to hire somebody who will blow smoke up his (and your) ass. Another yes man (or woman) who likely will have no expertise for the position but will say whatever Trump wants them to say.

One more agency in this country with no credibility.
