Quote from: Brian on August 15, 2025, 11:20 AMI believe it was Winston Churchill who said something like "democracy is the worst form of government ever devised, except for all of the other forms that have been tried" (I will have to see if I can find the actual quote), and on occasion I've wondered the same about our current incarnation of what we call "capitalism."

Found it!

https://winstonchurchill.org/resources/quotes/the-worst-form-of-government/

After brief reflection, I think I can put a finer point on it: the problem isn't really about "capitalism" or "democracy" per se, it has more to do with the corruption of either by the undue influence of $$$ (especially with regards to "democracy").

Citizens United, anyone?
We have unions to thank for that ruling. Their decades of unlimited contributions almost entirely to Democrats/Democrat causes brought that ruling onto us.

Quote from: Newbeeee™ on August 15, 2025, 11:28 AMIt's funny - talk to my parents (87) about Churchill - "nasty man, total warmonger"....

Did they ever explain why they felt that way? (Not quibbling with this, just curious to hear their take on it, as it seems at odds with the popular take from us Yanks).

Yeah, the solution to corruption is more corruption...got it!

Really?
I wonder why they say that. He was only Prime Minister for WW2. Other wars he was serving I believe.
Kinda hard for Britain to stay out of WW2.

Unfortunately we gotten even worse than that. We are so tribally divided now that no dissent is allowed. You are not allowed to be critical or question something your tribe does. This is even worse than the $$$ corruption.

You know, I think you're right. We should let Union thugs and Democrats rule over us. It's working so well in Hawaii, California, New Jersey, and Chicago. We DEFINITELY need more of that.

And what is even worse than what you pointed out is that one cannot even "understand" an opponent's point of view without being branded as being in the pocket of, or a sympathizer of some sort.

We all have Nazi Pelosi to thank for the current state of affairs. She took the gloves off when she called Republicans and their supporters "enemies of the state"... it's on. There's no walking that back. So yeah, anybody that voted for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of The House... they are supporeters of that and they waned tribalsm... they got it. In spades.

The funniest thing is watching how both you and Smit are the same, just opposite sides of the coin. You both only see what you party ideology allows and call the other close minded.

James, you missed the point entirely (I'll admit I didn't state it explicitly, as I assumed it would be somewhat obvious); one might ask why campaign contributions are allowed at all, from any sources.

I've always thought the expression "campaign finance" was really just a euphemism for "bribery."

If you've not seen my criticisms of the Republican Party... and even a pretty thorough roasting of Ronnie... well, I can't help you.
