Youth sports, the slap heard across the field

I think there's something else to consider here, as well: while it's great to put your (or your kid's, friends, etc) all into a sport, please get an education while you can! I have/had several friends and acquaintances who were hot local cyclists or even "national class" racers, but by and large, even if you *can* actually make a living doing this for a while, it doesn't last....and then you get to figure out what to do for the rest of your life. Let's not even discuss the potential that one injury can mean the end of the line, too.....you can go from hero to zero in a heartbeat!

Our HS track/cross-country coach also mentioned this, as these sports were especially difficult to support oneself with.

Some of the folks I knew went on to have successful careers/lives once they got outta cycling, and some others seemed sorta like they peaked and then kinda had to figure out what's next when they were no longer the hero....
