Between one thirty and two o'clock, the fire alarm in the building I work in went off. Everyone evacuated. We were all standing outside the building when they told us to stand outside the fence. This involve going through a turnstile.
A few months ago they instituted a badge out policy; this is not for attendance. They gave a bunch of reasons, one of which was so the knew how many people are in the building, in case of emergency. Like a fire. They assured us that in case of emergency the turnstiles would be free wheeling. They weren't. All 100-150 of us (just guessing) had to badge out through two turnstiles. It didn't take long, but, if this had been a serious emergency people could have gotten hurt.

But, man; first the Spirit (soon to be Boeing) fire department get here. They were getting completely geared up in their fire suits and air tanks and masks. Then a county fire truck showed up; then one of those small trucks that Fire Chiefs drive. Then a city fire truck showed up.

Not much happened. It on the end of the building that is home to a small Machine shop and an autoclave. A few firemen were on the roof but I couldn't see what they were doing. After about 30 or 40 minutes later the trucks started leaving and we came back inside. Some people said they saw smoke and there was a terrible smell like plastic burning. That was about it.

Atleast when you all burn up waiting to badge out they will have an easy way to ID everyone....

We all got chased of of our building earlier this year...smoke in the 3rd floor...(floor I work on)

One of the engineers put his bagel into the toaster oven and went to talk to someone....

Chaos ensued....the toaster oven and toaster in our pantry area have now been permanently located into the cafeteria.

LOL! Years ago, I was making spaghetti for dinner; I got the water boiling and put in the pasta and then went to lay down "just for a few minutes." I somehow fell asleep and wasn't awakened until the smoke alarm went off, by which time the water had completely boiled off and the spaghetti was just starting to ignite!

I had a sandblaster (bike frame building days), and I used it to clean up the Revereware pot, but of course the newly textured surface didn't clean up nearly as well as the original finish did! I was just happy I didn't catch the house on fire! Good times!

More recently, my wife unwittingly incinerated some frozen samosas from Trader Joe's; we didn't discover them until a few days later when she went to bake something (intentionally this time-LOL). Not only did we find the baking sheet that had mysteriously gone missing, but we also found the charred remains of the missing other half of our Indian dinner. (I think she thought that our cats might have gotten to them).

The last time I almost caught the house on fire cooking, I think I was only 5 or 6 years old. I put a pot pie in the oven, went out to play, and forgot about it. When I came back from playing, the fire department was at the apartment. Luckily, it was just a lot of smoke.

I used to have a roommate that would set something on the stove to cook, turn on the pan and then go get high and forget about it. Happened probably a dozen times that we had to have a rule that if he wanted to live here he had to stand right next to the stove. He still managed to almost burn the house down a few times.

My favorite was when he was trying to make charcoal and somehow dumped the embers on onto a dry pile of grass next to a whole bunch of dead blackberry bushes. Shit started to catch and he ran on over to it with a big bucket of water which he spilled 99% of running over to it. It was like in a cartoon. Good thing i was there with the hose otherwise half the block would probably burned.

Don't do drugs kids.

LOL! I was certainly old enough to know better, probably 19 or 20, but was racing my bike at the time as well as working a fulltime job at the bike shop. I'd get up at about 5:30, go train for a couple three hours, choke down some brekkie, ride the bike to work, work all day till 7 and then go home, make supper and be in the sack by 9 or so. By the time supper rolled around I was spanked! I'm surprised I didn't burn the supper more often....ate lots and lots of pasta!

I thought I read somewhere that smoking in bed is one of the leading causes of house fires, too....haven't tried to verify this, though.
