Quote from: jstell on October 16, 2025, 12:45 PMThe only other option for a stable functioning society would be a livable minimum wage.

One of the reason's minimum wage is what it is is because of people coming here from shithole countries, where there standard of living is very low. They come here, pile 50 people in a house, and it is still luxurious compared to where they come from. They will work for little money, because any money is better way than the shithole they came from. So you get several million people who are willing and excited to work for peanuts....therefor keeping wages low for the natives too.

South Park explained it quite well actually. "Dey took ower jerbs!!!!"

I don't hate or want to steal from people based on their economic profile like you.

The top 10% pay 70+% of the taxes. 70>30 They ARE paying their taxes.

:coffee:

When you pay insurance, you don't expect to get back what you put in.  You are subsidizing the unfortunate.  And if you are the unfortunate one, you likely get back more than you put in.

For 2025, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security tax is $176,100.  So after that they are not paying in.  That also happens to be approximately the income it takes to be in the top 10%.

Quote from: Bucky Cornstarch on October 16, 2025, 01:56 PMThis is fantastic, and your efforts to make California even better aren't going unnoticed. Is there any way we can thank you?

The loss of 2 red votes won't change a thing here in crazy town.
The only thing me leaving California will do is reduced the state's income tax revenue by $40K/year, $6K per year in property taxes $2k in vehicle registrations and an unknown amount in sales taxes and various other fees and levies.
You're welcome to it...and if me leaving makes it a better place for you, laugh it up, It's all yours.
I might miss the beautiful weather in the spring, but that's about it.

I'm not forced at gun point and threats of incarceration to get insurance. Nice try though.

Back in my coal mining days, we had guys who maxed their SS tax in June.

No one ever went broke paying taxes.  If you don't make enough to have to pay taxes, you might worry about being broke though.  Unless you're Jeff Bezos and write off your rockets as a loss so you don't pay any taxes.

My point was simply that SS is a regressive tax after ~$180k, and don't even get me started on the fact that a lot of high earners income is capital gains taxed at 15% (or 20% if they're lucky enough to be making more than half a million or so).

If you dont/can't pay your property tax, they'll seize your home and your equity and throw you out in the street.

Good thing there's social security to provide income to the retired-but-not-wealthy so they can afford to stay housed.

You are required to have insurance to drive, under threat of fines or license suspension.  If you are an employer you are required to have worker's comp insurance, under threat of fine or other penalty, up to jail time after repeat offenses.  These are just examples of governmentally enforced 'taxes' paid to private corporations.

I think that is the most ignorant statement I've ever read on this forum.
Offhand I can think of a half dozen businesses and people I've known over the years who were driven into poverty
by unmanageable tax burdens.

I once lost access to my tools for 3 months when the business I worked for was seized by the Feds for unpaid
taxes.

Taxes are one of the reasons I closed my contracting business.
By the time the taxes, state fees and accounting costs were paid, the business was more trouble than it was worth.

I don't HAVE TO drive. I can Uber, get a taxi, walk, ride a bicycle, take a bus, plane,  or train.

ALL of those things you mentioned are choices. One chooses to do them.
