A lot of the problem in America is culture. American culture is work for 15-20 years or so. Become an expert or highly experienced in field/position. Move into leadership, then coast for the rest of career. In my experience working for a machine tool dist, the biggest opposition to technology was middle aged or older employees that didn't want to have to learn new technology. They wanted to coast the last 10+ years of their career. China does not give employees the power to hold back technology because they don't want to learn something new.

That scenario sounds miserable to me.

Miserable not learning new tech and coasting, or miserable being forced to learn new tech?

I personally would be miserable if I just did the same thing for the rest of my career and didn't learn and grow.

There will be PLENTY of time for me coasting... when  I'm dead.

A day with no learning is a wasted day as far as I'm concerned.

Coasting. My brother in law quit working at 50 and has done virtually nothing since then. He's around my age and he has gone bat shit crazy.
I'm pretty sure it's depression; he's been convinced he's dying for about the last year. They've spent thousands of dollars on tests and everything comes back fine. He refuses to go talk to a psychologist.

How much time does he spend on Webmd.com?
I have a friend who's a hypochondriac, she's always convinced she has an illness or a virus of some sort.

Definitely stay off the internet, that's where you "catch" (ie self-diagnose) everything.

I don't know. To be honest, and mean, I admit, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. And 3 out of 4 of his children either are or have children who are on the Autism spectrum, so that may be a factor.

On the other hand, my wife was told most of her adult life that she was fine and it was all in her head. Told she just needed meds for depression. Then eventually the right doctor finds she was born with congenital intestinal malrotation. She also was diagnose with EDS, which is a connective tissue disorder that is generally a contributing factor in malrotation. Unfortunately doctors are trained to "look for horses, not zebras" when it comes to rare diseases. Many people live with issues because their conditions requires more investigation and testing than our shitty insurance driven healthcare system will allow for.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife.

Public option.
