Quote from: Smit on October 20, 2025, 06:49 AMOn the bright side, you can get soy beans for next to nothing because China's not buying soy beans from the U.S. now. It's not nearly as satisfying as a nice rib eye but protein is protein, right?

Talk about fucking over the farmers, who are reliable Trump voters. And fucking over the rest of us too!

uhhhh.... cheap feed and good cattle prices. just saying some farmers are loving it.

I'd like to think a large portion of the profits from raising cattle go to the farmers but I expect the majority is going to the processors, distributors, and grocery stores.

But point taken....somebody is always getting rich when prices sky rocket!

I used to be able to get bucket calves for $100-$200. Right now Bucket calves are selling for $1000. They only have about a 60% survival rate. Cattle farmers are doing ok. I know several farmers that are switching row crop fields to grass right now, as we speak.

Support your local small farm as if your future food source depends on it.... because it just might some day.

This feels like a BS question a MSNBC host would ask someone. There are a crap ton of variables that could change the answer.

Like what? That's why I asked.

We've been tariffed out of some markets. If we're going to be importing it anyway, should we care where it comes from as long as it's more affordable, and quality beef?
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

For lean ground beef - I did the conversion to USD/lbs (as obviously I paid in CAD/Kg) - we paid $3.64USD/lbs at Costco this weekend. Unsure where that cow lived before it was Anton Chigurh'd. Ground beef has been down/steady for us up here, but steak has been up probably 30%. Saw 3 packs of rib steaks for ~$110 CAD.

Yes, we should care if we are importing from countries that are not allies. If their positions, actions, and general sentiment are not good for America then no. Until a new leader is in power and we can assess the situation it is just playing hypotheticals.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why we would import FOOD from China.

That makes as much sense as letting your enemy educate your children.
