F it, I'm thinking a couple of my Win10 machines are going to go Linux if I have some free time over the holidays.  Just kinda tired of fighting Win11 for crap like this.  I might switch my Win11 home pc to Linux as well.  I'll let my IT guy fight the AI on the work machine.

Shout out for Kubuntu as it comes with KDE and loaded with lots of programs.
Ubuntu too which Kubuntu is based on is rock solid.
Friend also using Mint which is also rock solid.
Unfortunately we have a teevee media centre with win10 on it.... but it stayed in storage for around 8 months and lost the auto update ability - early 10 couldn't have had it. So it's okay for now (that said it's back in storage and has been for 4 months so is only okay providing nobody has nicked it :hrhr: ) but every time i fired it up i felt dirty.... so it prolly will be Kubuntoed in the near future....

Going down the rabbit hole a bit, I'm thinking mint will be my starting point.  Haven't used Linux in a decade or more, last venture was Ubuntu.

You can also go with Windows 10 LTS as well. Not sure how compatiablility will work with things newer. I will probably migrate all the shop compters to W10 LTS. Somoene needs to make a compatability layer that will allow CAD/CAM to run on linux. Probably will never happen but one can only hope.

Maybe there needs to be a Professional CAD/CAM linux fork?

I really wish Mastercam would release a Linux build.

DO IT. I waffled for a while about making the jump:

I have moved my win 10 workstation at home to Ubunutu LTS, and it has been nothing but rock solid for 2 months now. Any negatives so far were config missteps by me, ie: mounting the RAID as removable media accidentally and wondering why it kept disappearing. I was facing frequent crashes and instability on that machine under windows, and now it even runs cooler. Like 10°C cooler at idle, so I never turn it off anymore. Also the speed of internal file transfers is like 700 mb/s to the RAID array, never got close to that on windows. It is simply a better, faster and more stable experience all round.

That's kind of funny. The first ten years of my programming life were done on Unix machines.

So what are the chances of making your computer into a brick by doing all this stuff??  :hrhr:

jstell

I'm sure Windows will fight it like how they claimed it was impossible to delete the old Internet Explorer because it was "integral" to the operating system ...until the US (2001) and EU (2007 initiated by a complaint from Opera) slapped them with an anti-trust/anti-competition lawsuit.

Probably the same odds as a windows update bricking it....
