Francis Crick (co-discoverer of DNA structure) has a quote or two on religion.  Here's one:
"Christianity may be ok between adults in private but should not be taught to young children."
Some would say religious indoctrination should be considered child abuse.

I ran across this one the other day, and I think it pretty much sums it up.
"Religion is kinda like a penis.  It's fine if you have one.  It's even ok if you're real proud of it.  But it's not ok if you whip it out and start waving it around in public, and definitely not ok if you try to shove it down children's throats."

Run the numbers. Who's more likely? The dude in the dress, or the priest?
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

It's the same thing.  They just call them robes to be fancy.  Liturgical Vestments, so beej doesn't have to correct me.

I never really thought I'd get to this point....because I never really thought about it too much upto joining eWC and speaking with and reading the convo's, but....
Overall, at local level, I now believe religion is 100% a good thing.
Love thy neighbour, look after people in distress, support and whip-round for those who need it etc.
The world needs far more of this IMHO....

You don't need religion for this.  You just need a like-minded community to gather and address the local needs.  Religion is a stand-in for that for a lot of people, but the fairy tale part is completely unnecessary.

What's "whip-round"?

Being the most vocal atheist on the forum, I agree.

The only problem I've ever had with religion are the hypocrites.

That and the proselytizing.

I once had a man with pamphlets show up on my porch on a pleasant afternoon, and because I was feeling good about the day, and because he had his middle-school-age son with him, I didn't reach for the broom to run him off.  His schtick was about the importance of honesty and truth in the face of lies, and how truth was the ultimate good, ultimate goal.  I had recently read Sam Harris' "Lying" and pointed out to this man that truth is almost always the best policy, but occasionally it is unwise.  Example:  when your wife asks "Do these pants make my butt look big?"  You should definitely not tell her "Honey, it's not the pants."  He got a chuckle, and his kid blushed.  And I recommended the Sam Harris book to him, saying "he's written a couple other books, but this one's a short read."  So I got my own ammusment at the thought of him looking up Sam Harris.

The older I've got, the more open minded I've become.
Many strange happenings and coincidences, and I don't really believe in coincidences....

Whip-round is hand in pocket - everyone putting money in a pot to help someone out.
