Better stock up on your menthols if you smoke them.

I guess making lives better = banning things that they like?     Why aren't they banning all cigarettes and making everyone's life better?

QuoteThe Food and Drug Administration appears likely to move to ban menthol in cigarettes this week — a step, experts say, that has been years in the making and that could have a significant positive impact on the health of Black Americans.

The FDA's decision would not ban menthol immediately, but rather kick off the rule-making process to do so, which could take years.

"The winds are definitely in our favor," said Delmonte Jefferson, executive director of the Center for Black Health & Equity, citing both the decades of data that show that the cooling flavor in cigarettes makes it easier to start smoking combined with the current cultural momentum toward improving the lives of Black Americans.

Because the tabacco companies give the politicians WAY too much money.
Same with Big Pharm, and the oil companies.

They should banned cigs years ago. But instead they settled for a warning label.

The question was meant to be rhetorical.

It seem to me, and I haven't done a bunch of research on this so take it for what it worth; banning a 'flavor' of tobacco is a waste of time.

Here are a few details just off the top of my head:

Menthol cigarettes are considered a training cigarette because they feel less harsh. Young people are more likely to start with them whether they are black or white. Another problem is that people who smoke menthol cigs tend to inhale the smoke deeper into their lungs and to hold it longer before exhaling. The theory is that this magnifies the harm done to the lungs.

It will take years before enforced.

Never liked menthol cigarettes. Yuck.

I briefly skimmed a NY Times article and it talked about this not being the first time this has come up.

I did think that it was a little curious that they make it sound as if the reason behind it is to make black lives better.

I didn't bother to look in to the other times or reasons they discussed banning them in the past. You're explanation does make more sense.

Black market?
Well that's just racist...Reported!  :popo:

YoDoug

My guess is it would switch a lot of menthol smokers to vaping to get menthol type flavors.

Hmm, vaping is not for everyone, I could see this driving a huge "underground" market for soccer moms and such who smoke menthols.

Flavored vapes is on its way out as well. Minnesota already has a bill in progress to ban them and I believe other states have already banned them.

That could be a game changer for big tobacco, vaping has been killing their business, perhaps this will drive smokers back to them.
