Quote from: YoDoug on Today at 11:33 AMSee, that would be a first step to having a discussion. I agree, government rarely ever fixes the issue and I tread very lightly on gov oversight. So what do we do to discourage immoral greed driven business practices that are harmful to people?

Lets be 100% honest here... I mean, I'm seriously struggling to find a problem "government solved" that did not become a whole lot worse for nearly everyone. Even as great as the Interstate system of highways is, it still managed to destroy communities in it's path and communities it bypassed.

I have more faith in 90% of the people in this room to solve a real world problem than I do ANYONE in the halls of government.

I am not very confident in gov abilities either. However I can't just say, even if it is not perfect, it's the best we have while I watch the future being destroyed. Our children and especially grandchildren will not have the same opportunities we have had. Every dystopian movie future of two classes in society, ultra-rich and poor, is where we are heading. Our current "it's best we have ever tried" is what is facilitating that future. I for one think we need to stop celebrating massive wealth inequality as good. I'm not saying we need to make gov step in, but lets call them what they are, greedy immoral POS that don't care if the entirety of society ends up in abject poverty if it gets them more wealth and power. I don't think that alone will change things, but it will start to change the general publics attitude and perhaps create some more unity among the voting populace.

Well, since you mentioned me I'll offer this.

Doug, as I've mentioned before, when you're lucid you make some damn good arguments. For instance, you are, IMHO, quite correct in your observations in what's going on in our country right now.

Having said that, you go off on these tangents that are pretty wild.

But for right now, keep up the solid observations and don't careen off on one of your tangents.

Furthermore, it's people who muck up any economic system. In theory socialism and communism should work just fine, in Reko's perfect world where everybody does the right thing. Nutboy too, he seems to think if we abolished government everybody would do the right thing and capitalism would be perfect.

There are many examples of countries that are combinations of socialist/capitalistic economic systems that work relatively well. The Netherlands, Canada, Norway, Finland, others. Including the U.S. Except the U.S. might not be one of the places that operate the best anymore, sadly enough.

We're actually a combination socialist/capitalist/authoritarian government system right now.

I don't think it's working the way the founding fathers envisioned.

Same old story. Nobody who would make a good leader wants the job.

After I typed that sentence, it dawned on my that it was making an assumption that there are people who would make good leaders.

Or maybe it's another old story. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. While no one has absolute power, some people come close or think they do.

I'm fairly certain that nearly every single person from County Government up through the halls of the US Congress are compromised in one way shape or form. For sure EVERY full time politician is. They may not compromised by deviant behavior, though, let's be completely honest, that seems to be the de rigueur for that politician/elite crowd... you know it, I know it, we ALL know it... but, they could be compromised by past business dealings, past confidential legal action, sealed records, quid pro quo, etc... and face it, very few among us is willing literally clean house. "My guy/gal is OK, yours is a schmuck."

We're all human. We've all made mistakes. Some mistakes are bigger than others, and if you venture into that arena, it's going to come out. ALL of it. And it's going to come out in the most unflattering way humanly possible. Their family, their friends, their acquaintances, their social media history, their running with scissors in the hallway in 1st grade is coming out. Every last gruesome detail from then until now.

So, in order for it to not come out, I think you just might need to make deals, or as in the case of former VP Kamala Harris... you gotta play the skin flute.
