We had some excitement this morning
I was walking through the plant about 7AM when there was a loud bang and the power went off
The lights came right back up, then there was a bright flash,  another loud bang, the lights
went off again and the building started filling up with smoke.
I though we had a fire, but there were no flames... just a lot of smoke.

The transformer on the street ( the same one a drunk destroyed a couple of months ago) was smoking
the big transformer out side the building was smoking and the doors were blown off three refrigerator
sized circuit boxes inside. Eventually they sent everybody home.

I have the Mastercam backup utility backing up to my PC so brought it home and I'm working with my personal hasp
CNC Software set me up with an eval license for my top lathe guy and he's working at home too.
The rest of the shop is taking a 3 day weekend
I have no idea how long the repairs will take or if there is any damage to machines or the network
The cause of all this was a rat.  They found his charred remains in the wreckage of the outside transformer.

We have squirrels blowing up transformers in our neighborhood about once a year. It's a pain in the ass but the electric company is used to them and we have power after about an hour.

I love time off, but....
I can get more done working 2 days at home than I can working a week at the office.

Wouldn't this be a Mass Outage??

Anybody remember The Cobra and The Ratt, Drag Racing in Irwindale??

Maybe you guys should put a Few Cobras around to clear up the Rats?

They got power back on late Friday afternoon.
There wasn't enough left of the rat to make a decent taco.
We've got 2 machines that have failed to start this morning.
All in all that was a very expensive way to kill a rat

I guess i'm having a hard time understanding how a rat on a transformer outside was able to flip the entire grid in your Building.
I do understand that at The Transformer there are fuses. I've seen limbs across lines that can blow it out. only one time have I seen
lighting hit the pole and travel into the shop and take out a Machine. Surge protection??

I wasn't questioning you . I'm in a Building that has been here for well over 100 years. If a spider Farts it could possibly shut us down.
There are Busses here older than me, and if something is not working you just start flipping switches. we prolly have four refrigerator size panels that we don't know what they do. I assumed you were in more of a state of the art Building.
No Offense meant.

Likely back-feeding power through the ground wire, or the rat was able to jump the incoming 15k+ voltage on the line side of the transformer to a leg of 480v on the load side.

Either way it was a quick way to die and not good on electronics.
