Damn pot smokers!

Supreme Court will consider whether people who regularly smoke pot can legally own guns

https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-marijuana-guns-e86c342bf248c7822722ad027980b72b

"President Donald Trump's administration asked the justices to revive a case against a Texas man charged with a felony because he allegedly had a gun in his home and acknowledged being a regular pot user. The Justice Department appealed after a lower court largely struck down a law that bars people who use any illegal drugs from having guns.

Last year, a jury convicted Hunter Biden of violating the law, among other charges. His father, then-President Joe Biden, later pardoned him.

Arguments probably will take place early in 2026, with a decision likely by early summer.

The Republican administration favors Second Amendment rights, but government attorneys argued that this ban is a justifiable restriction."

The pot people are using today is not the pot we used when we were young.
It's much more powerful and is causing serious mental issues with heavy users.
I read a study from a midwestern state, (Ohio??) that said 60% of drivers involved in
fatal crashes were under the influence of pot or some form of edible.
I was a pretty heavy user back in the day but quit completely in the mid 80's,
I didn't quit because I wanted to, but because my lungs just flat said no more!

Confession.... I'm a recovering pot smoker. It's been since March-ish 1987 since I last smoked it. Now that is cleared up.

I've always thought singling out pot users on the non-scheduled "pharmaceutical" list of prohibited persons legally allowed to own firearms borders on the absurd while completely disregarding alcohol abusers who are exponentially more violent and far more prone to bad decision making and more apt to discharge a firearm in a manner inconsistent with safety.

Should be an interesting case to see how keeping pot users on the list of prohibited persons unable to legally purchase a firearm is considered Constitutional.

That said, Hunter's main crime was lying on a Federal Form... which BTW is a CLEARLY stated felony... and not an accidental one. You check a box and sign the form that you attest to the truth and accuracy of your replies to the form.

Should Marijuana be on the form? I'm torn. The GOOD  weed I had as a teenager would today be considered dirt weed. THC content BITD was in the single to low double digits. Today the THC content is exponentially higher and can be a real problem. The Psychoactive chemicals and how they interact with the mind isn'tsomethign to be taken lightly.

It could be an interesting case to watch because the potential to see a high degree of clinical exploration into the chemistry of modern Marijuana products and their affects on judgement.

Personally, I think that alcohol and guns is a much worse mix than pot and guns.

I know a LOT of people who smoke pot. Nearly all of them vote Republican (nearly all of my friends are Conservatives), and a good number of them are ex-military gun owners. I'm curious what they're going to think about this.

I stopped smoking pot in 1986 when I was 16. I can't deal with that shit anymore. I tried some when I had eye surgery (cancer). It made me want to hide under the couch.

My tin-foil hat conspiracy theory on this, is that Republican legislators think that more often than not, pot smokers tend to be liberals anyway.

I expect so. Considering the Republicans we have on the Supreme Court I think there is a good chance they will take the guns from pot smokers.

That would be kinda funny considering they think it's unconstitutional to take guns from nuts.

Pretty wild step, honestly. But yea, since legalization there have been major pushes into high potency that we couldn't have dreamed of before. It's not just weed now, it's concentrates that you can buy having upwards of 1000mg THC per bottle. We're talking a 100 GOOD joints worth of getting high in one bottle of oil. And the infused joints that you can get now are strong, plus these are the ones being pushed hard. Used to be you could crumble a little hash in your roll and rock a steady buzz, now they're dripped and dipped with tarry bullshit and low-quality distillate that punches you in the face with a buzz and then disappears.

Corporate weed is heading the way of cigarettes, pump it with extra stuff until the actual weed inside is an afterthought because your customer base is hooked on the adjuncts in the joints. I'm firmly rooted in the fact that you could not get physically addicted to 80s or 90s, hell even 00s weed. I've been a lifelong advocate, I don't think that is the case any longer.

So this idea of barring gun ownership is a MASSIVE overstep that will hopefully go nowhere, but we should be having these conversations, especially when the weed industry is forging ahead at warp speed. You can't make alcohol any more alcoholic, for instance, but we seem to be able to push the intoxicating effect of a single toke further and further.

I've never believed pot wasn't addictive.
I knew guys in the 70's and early 80's that were totally unable to function without a joint in the morning.
Whether it was a physical or emotional addiction was irrelevant. They were addicted and incapable of living a normal
life. They were really no different than hard core heroin addicts, same lifestyle, same problems, just a different drug.
On the other hand, I knew people who were regular coke users. They held responsible jobs and lived relatively normal lives, except for always being flat broke due to the cost of maintaining their habit.

If they do that then they should take guns away from anyone who uses alcohol. What's more likely, some stoner getting pissed and shooting someone or some drunk getting pissed and killing someone?

Yeah, and this name calling shit is getting real old real fast. I thought we had gotten past it.
