I'll admit. I've not heard the idea called "crazy".  "Blackmail", "victim extortion",  but not "crazy".   

It makes sense for Zelenskyy as a business deal.

Currently they are only mining a small percentage of the huge mineral deposits that are there, and their mining and processing techniques are antiquated and very inefficient.
The US offered to help Ukraine set up and modernize their mining operations in return for a percentage of the product.

It is a win/win for both countries.
The US gets a partial return on all of the financial support given to Ukraine during the war,
and Ukraine gets their mining operations modernized, which will allow them reap the financial benefits needed to rebuild their country quickly.

That's how Trump presented it, and though Zelenskyy balked at first, he may have thought it through and consulted with his advisors, and they agreed that the upside was more beneficial for them in the long run.

Either way, I think both countries will derive mutual benefit by working together in a business partnership.
