...Florida lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow children as young as 14 to work overnight shifts, even on school nights."
:sigh:

This is the "labor" equivalent to the "what about rape and incest" abortion argument.

Our problems are not "child labor" problems. THose are distractions from the REAL problem of state and local government overreach/excessive/abusive overregulation. Plain and simple. Address that REAL problem first.

I agree. address the real problem before you decide to loosen restrictions on child labor. That's a no brainer.

Quote from: neurosis on April 04, 2025, 01:06 PMCan you show some numbers on that?  I'd be curious to see how much of that is regulation and now much is labor costs? We already know that the labor costs are WAY higher than they are in some other countries.

Even if it is regulation, can that be curbed enough to make "made in america" affordable?

Personally I'm willing to pay more for American made products. Same reason I will spend more to support local businesses.

That's a no brainer with people that have two functioning brain cells that work real jobs. To bureaurcrats looking to justify their miserable existance in the workforce... #NotSoMuch They never met a regulation they didn't love enough to impose it.

Del, I think that everyone would be. The question is going to be, can you afford it.

This is already starting to turn, but it's a serious question.

Yea.. I used to be one of those people.

Luckily I learned my lesson when I was young.  In my teens.

I never live outside of my means.  I do without a lot but I don't buy anything on credit that isn't a necessity. Home or vehicle.

Quote from: neurosis on April 04, 2025, 01:19 PMAre they smart enough to fill those positions? Not to call people dumb, but not by ambition, but capability?

Our public school system is doing a terrible job of educating young people.
Our welfare system pays people to be dysfunctional one parent households and rewards then for having more children.
Large portions of our society have utter distain for education and hard work.
Our problems are self made, I must admit I have no idea how to fix them.

It's easy to blame the welfare system, but unless you've lived in that black hole, you don't know how hard it is to dig your way out. It's not just the welfare. It's the disparity in education, the connections and friends you make, the life you're taught to live.  It's tough.  I'm not making excuses.  I came out of it.

Kids today that don't have some kind of generational wealth are probably fucked. Growing up how I did, if I had to do it today, I don't think I would make it.

I will agree it is tougher if you want out.

But we have a whole generation of "Gimme I'm Lazy".

Yes , they get support for more babies and That big ol' Child tax credit for $10,000 plus every year.

And nobody behind the counter is making them accountable.

In your case and Mine we got Beat with system and a very large stick .

And both managed to make a fair life of it.

I live within my means and don't owe anyone any money. :D

You did it and so did I. It takes hard work and a plan to better your future and patience to make it happen.

2.14 High School GPA ( and if it weren't for electives it probably would have been 1.4) checking in to lay the smack down.

Ima tell you a true story. Back in 1992 through 1996, I'm in Manufacturing classes at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut California.  A certain gentleman was in most of the same classes I was... for all those years. I will refrain from using his name because frankly, if he were to read it, it would probably make him embarrassed... as it should. Anyway. We took all the same classes. Knew all the same people. Worked in the same general region (Inland Empire). Read all the same Trade Magazines.

I took all the classes I could there. I also got the job at Mori Seiki so I was not going to be available to take classes anymore. and I was done there for the most part anyway. Fast forward to 2002. I've since moved on from Mori to the local Mastercam Dealer and moved on from that to an OEM machine shop and teaching Mastercam Classes at night at the NTMA in Ontario, California.

Guess who rolls into one of my classes? Yep, my old friend. He asks me, and I quote... "What are you doing up there?" I tell him "Wrong question. The real question is why aren't you up here with me!". Then came the litany of bullshit excuses.

The reality is in this nation, the opportunities to come from shit and make something of yourself are innumerably plentiful. You HAVE to work for it though. NOBODY is going to give it to you. "Generational wealth" is a bullshit cop-out. People need to stop fucking making excuses and start making choices that are going to move them to where they want to be.

I lost count the number of people I've known that came to this country not knowing the language, barely having any money, nothing but a dream. They now run or own machine shops and are very successful. They didn't make or tolerate excuses. They made shit happen.

Bottom line... MAKE SHIT HAPPEN OR STFU!

All this say's about you is how arrogant you are.

James.. for fucks sakes. I grew up with people who could barley tie their shoes.  If I held that against them would you call me an ass hole?

I don't disagree. If you're capable, and you let it slip away, then you wasted your life. If you look down on people who aren't as capable, then you're just an arrogant ass hole.
