Quote from: mayday post_id=18408 time=1636988745 user_id=77one question?
what drives one to want to go to Cuba?
to me that's like saying, I'm vacationing in Iraq this year, I'm going to the swing by Beirut and sit by the beach and eat camel spiders

Cuba is hardly Iraq, Wes.
It's a beautiful country with great resorts and tourists are treated very well, as long as you follow the rules it is very safe.
The embargoes by the united states gov however have done a lot of damage here, although it pales compared to the damage and loss of life in the D.P.R.K. or North Korea as it is called here.

Me? I needed a vacation, here i can eat out at restaurants, go to a movie or the opera. Ride a bus or train across the country,
Back in Canada i can do none of these things because i refuse to take an experimental vaccine for a variety of the flu.

Cuba is more free than their neighbors to the north in many ways.

The embargos are somewhat necessary because anything and everything will be confiscated by the government. It would never make it to the people. Remember, this is a dictatorship. Corruption runs rampant. They pit citizens against citizens with promises of perks.

Cuba is a mild case, u.s. embargoes have likely claimed the lives of millions of citizens of the dprk...  Inequality in a regime doesn't absolve the owner of the world reserve currency of responsibility of the result of embargoing a nation, it brings inevitable devastastation upon the people when sustained for years and even generations...

I would say in general cuba is the rudest country in terms of customer service and people butting in line, and in havana the con artists will tell you all sorts of lies, but the locals are very friendly to talk to

Sorry, this is a touchy subject to me. But this statement right here only absolves the tormentor and places it where? On the US? The Cuban regime could have avoided this altogether by becoming part of civil society and taking responsibility for their people and their actions. But as all socialist dictatorships have shown, the oppressors take and the people give and get nothing. Cuba is not a mild case. You obviously didn't venture outside of the resort amongst the most poorly stricken. Most Cubans, unless you work for the system, make less than $30 a week.

I am currently living outside the resort and have been for two weeks, i only did the mandatory 5 day stay in a resort that was required at the time while they pcr test you.

The people i have met are making about 30$ a month, not a week and prices are inflated for most essential goods, many have to do without or ration and repair as they can.

People working for the system also do not make a lot of money, the highest paid are those working for the resorts.

I say mild as opposed to the millions who starved to death in the dprk, the situation is very dire here, and i am not trying to absolve anyone of responsibility, however the embargoes don't help?

I don't like the embargoes. but I also don't like losing our fellow country men in wars. Starving armies can't fight, plain and simple. And these regimes could always change their philosophy and feed their people.
Human pride weighed you down so heavily that only divine humility could raise you up again. ~Augustine of Hippo

re embargos
Nearly every President since the 50's have cut deals with the Norks.
Food for no nuclear research.. EVERY.SINGLE.TIME, the Norks sold the food on the open market and used
the $$$ to build nukes... and the people starve anyway
Trump said no nukes first, then food... and the people starve.
