We've been in the process of moving into our forever home (we'll see) and doing some upgrades along the way.  The wifey just had to have these "cafe" branded GE appliances to go in our kitchen.  These things (fridge, oven and dishwasher) are one step down from the Top o' the line in the GE lineup.
I'll say they are pretty trick lookin' but that's where it ends.

Day two:  The fridge is spraying water out of the back of it.  Maintenance guy shows up, not enough parts, will be back another day.

Stove:  the door on the top oven appears to have had a 6 year old install it.  It's crooked pretty bad.

Dishwasher:  I haven't even installed it yet

WTF!  Can you buy refurbished 30 year old shit???  That stuff actually worked

We share your frustration. make them make it right.. if it takes water be very careful it can make a mess in a hurry and they cant make it all right.
we have come to conclusion top of the line as you can with no fancy chit. that is if it has screens, wifi, etc etc. we stay away from it. simple buttons work well for us and have for many years.
the more complicated electronics are the more likely made in china crap. ya i know its all made there but they seem to be able to make a simple switch and or I can replace that.
quality control looks very bad if non existent on forein electronics right now.

I've been sayin that this will be the Last GE anything I buy, but in reality, all the things are shit when it comes to commodity housewares.

Sorry to hear about your luck, Rstewart. I don't need any of that fancy shit either. All it is is something that will break.  I don't even like water coming from the fridge.

In our old house we bought all Electrolux Icon Series Appliances. With the exception of a single set screw on the refrigerator handle coming loose and the in range circuit breaker tripping once, everything was exceptional. It all worked as well the 1st day as it did 8 years later when we sold the house. We had a 36" range that could cook 2 12lb turkeys, and 3 large caserole dishes at the same time. Dish washer. Built In 42 Cu.ft. Refrigerator and Freezer. It wasn't cheap, but it was well made and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

The short answer to your question is, yes.

We bought all new Maytag appliances when we moved in back 1995. Only thing I ever had to do was occasionally replace the igniter in the gas dryer.

When we redid the kitchen a couple years ago, the wife needed all new stainless steel appliances for the kitchen. We went to the Maytag store and the  first thing the salesman said was, don't expect anything you buy today to last as long as your old stuff.

Our old fridge from '95 is still keeping beer plenty cold out in the garage.

My sister just bought a new Whirlpool washer & dryer back in July.
The repair guy has already been there several times for the washer not working.

First time he replaced a part, but the problem came back within a couple of days.
Once he figured out which part was the actual problem, they couldn't get one...

It took until mid-November to actually get it fixed.

Our dishwasher finally died three days ago. We had our repairman come out and he said that the new motor would cost $300 and it would still be a 20 year old appliance so we are going to go shopping for a new one on Friday. One thing that our repairman strongly recommends is that we buy a dishwasher with a built in grinder, some units (even expensive models) just have a filter that needs to be cleaned regularly.

there are only 3 appliance companies now.  GE, Whirlpool (which is actually electrolux), and Samsung.  Whirlpool owns most of the major brands you've heard of, maytag, amana, etc.  when Maytag was competing against Amana, there was incentivie to make their appliances the better than anybody.  Now whirlpool decides how long each brand will last and what it will cost.

I feel your pain ,been there done that . The new stuff is junk.
The old Kenmore washer and dryer , no electronics last forever .
I got rid of the 8 year old front loader Maytag's that kept giving me fits. The washer always stunk , no matter how often I cleaned it.
I repaired the dryer three times in 8 years for the heater element $60 a shot and had to replace the barrel bearing last spring $100
I bought old refurbished Kenmore washer and dryer $500  for both.
8 year new fridge leaks on the inside , that's the managers and they aren't interested in fixing it..
Bought an old Kenmore for the garage , side by side probably 40 plus years old ,$20 on craigslist
its my beer kegerator  keeps the beer nice and cold , holds three 5 gallon kegs of my home brew 5 yr-ears old now , no problems .
old sears upright freezer probably from the 70's still works great $25 on craigslist .

Older is better. That's what I keep telling my wife anyway. :D

If there was a company selling refurbished 30 year old appliances, they'd make a killing.

we looked into Bosch a few years ago, and salesman pretty much said stay away. Made in Germany but they are all eco-friendly,
meaning limited water use, no drying element and expensive.. needless to say we didn't go with them.
