I can think of 10 different jobs I quit many years ago for same thing.

And therein lies the problem.

You suck me in I produce....and you claim damages.

"management"

Inherent in this Industry. And especially in my area.

get what you want when you walk in the door.

Or walk out.

Quote from: JParis on January 05, 2022, 10:50 AMIt's the new normal....and it's not just machininsts....it is across the board in every field you can name...

Between older people who decided they could retire with the advent of Covid to the younger crew that think they shouldn't have to work, to those who have no aspirations but want to be paid and treated like winners....

There are many reasons and few answers

Couldn't agree more.
There are HELP WANTED signs everywhere, but the jobs don't seem to ever be filled.

We have a favorite little family type restaurant in town where we usually have breakfast, but we have also stopped there for lunch or dinner on many occasions.

Last time we were there they had a sign on the door saying that due to staff shortages they would be closing every day at 2PM, only serving breakfast and lunch until further notice.
I'm sure that is cutting heavily into their cash flow by at least 1/3, and I would hate to see the place go out of business because people just don't want to work.

This is happening everywhere and even worse now that Omicron is spreading fast.

My oldest daughter is working part time at Starbucks while going to university, they get $2000.00 for tuition, free spotify pro account and medical benefits. Lots of signs out in front of places here saying "help wanted signing bonus"

My section has 14 mills and I am down to 4 machinists plus 1 guy who is mine for about 20 hours a week. My shop has been without a toolmaker for about a year. Last year we had a good candidate start working in my section, lots of experience but he needed a little work to get him up to our standards. Management cut his pay 5 Dollars when they found out that he wasn't as good as they thought and he was gone in 2 weeks. :hairpull:

Retirement is looking more and more attractive.

everyone around here expects to be paid $20-30/hr for any job, and most of those jobs aren't worth that kind of pay.  Especially here with the cost of living being extremely low.

We struggle to get people to even interview, for a climate controlled, laid back, flexible hours job.  There's virtually zero stress in any of the jobs here, and we still constantly get people calling in sick when they're not sick.

All the Biden Bucks, Stimulus payments etc etc are ruining a generation of young workers.

We have a kid here who was a really good worker.
His girlfriend had a baby and he took 1 month of his 2 months maternity leave
Then he took about 6 weeks off living on stimmy payments and child tax credits
He came back to work for about a week, then left for another month of maternity leave
He's back now, but he acts like a 40hr week is cruel and unusual punishment
He has an important job and his absence and diminished work ethic is really hurting us

Del.

I only work a day and a half a week but I trained a young man 22 years old who is as sharp and quick learner as I have seen.

I haven't read all the comments but I think it goes both ways.
It's hard to find good workers but shops don't seem to put any effort in keeping them when they do.
This is the first shop in a long time where I've gotten a good raise without asking or moving on.
Most shops offer me a raise when I give my 2 weeks, at wich point it's too late.

I never thought of retirement until last year...turning 55 in March and it has me thinking....I would still need something to do though.

With inflation being what it is, I think that this is about to become an ever bigger problem.

Shops had to struggle through covid and now inflation is making people want more money because they can't afford their mortgages anymore.   :shitfan:

I'm close to deciding if I want to jump ship where I'm at...

I've been here 6+ years, and I'm still waiting on theBossman to retire...every year it's been some reason and I'm looking to move up...as it stands he is in my way, my only option might be to relocate myself..

Not always about money, some times it's about opportunity...or lack thereof...

Unfortunately, opportunites for someone like myself are very, very thin...

I just bought my first Alberta home with a double heated garage.
I'm thinking of putting a small lathe in there and starting something of my own.

There is a lot to be said for a solid company and a steady pay check
I've been here 15 years and I am well paid.
The current management is driving me mad and I frequently think about moving on or retiring ahead
of schedule.
However, when I factor in my paycheck, and the drive that would be required to duplicate it elsewhere,
I grit my teeth and soldier on. My short term plan is to outlast my current manager.
Maybe the next one will be better
