When you acquire a seat of Mastercam, does it usually include a year of maintenance? Or would that be an additional cost?

As I've seen it, it is always quoted as an additional purchase.

Don't know if other resellers handle it differently but it is "optional"

From what I understand, it's good for 1 year, date of purchase.
Then you have the option to partake in maintenance when that 1st year is up.

There was no maintenance when I bought my seat
If memory serves, maintenance was introduced at version X (in 2002 ???)
If we add seats or modules to my employer's nethasp, maintenance is prorated
to the nethasp's maintenance expiration date. This is mandatory.
I don't know if maintenance is required on a stand along seat purchase
but it's been included on every quote I've ever seen.

Was that in the early 1900's?  :D

I think that you're dating yourself with that one. I'm pretty sure that when we purchased MC back in the V9 era, we had to pay maintenance on it. Maybe it was reseller specific?

pre X there was no annual maintenance.. you had to buy new releases ( at a reduced price from a new purchase)
When you bought v8 you got every V8 update that was released
when V9 was released you had to pay for it but you got every V9 update released for no additional $$$
I think V9's life cycle was about 2.5 years and you didn't pay a dime during that time.
With the release of X they started charging annual maintenance.
Depending on your expiration date that can leave you missing out on updates

For example.. if your maintenance expired in November 2021, you would be able to run MC2022 but would not be able to
run MC2022 Update 3 without renewing your maintenance

I think that when we purchased V9, X had just released. That probably explains it.

The base cost of your purchase will include the cost of a seat of maintenance, plus the cost of a seat, the more seats the more cost, some dealers run promotions at certain times of the year, ask for a "good deal", if you can!

I'm thinking the maintenance started either late V9 or early V9.1 .

Added: Our Multi axis licenses were also included for no maintenance charge.

Went back in the time machine at eMC and found this from 09/29/2003

Going back to the download archive the install exe file for V9 SP2 have a 10/02/2003 time stamp.
After that there was a V9 MR(xxxx), I forget the 4 digit number but I think it was 10?? and it
represented the month and year of the release ???
After that came the first X version

My records that far  back are not complete, but my earliest invoice from Mastercam is a 07/2005 maintenance renewal.
I know I had the V9 MR release, so I must have bought the optional maintenance in 2003
and then the regular annual maintenance in 08/2004

another trip down memory lane

V9.1 MR0304

That was the last legal release of V9 and maintenance was required

According to the linked thread there were also crack V9.2 and V9.3 releases

So the last V9 release was April 2004.

Wild guess, but I think the first X release came out in the late summer of 2005

2005 is correct, IIRC, it was released in late June or July....I know I attended the 1st X rollout in Aug 2005

Back to original Q - When i bought the 2x full seats I had year 1 "thrown in FOC".
But that was back X2 days....

Nope, MR0304. Very stable V9 release. I have still have the installers for all those V9.1 releases. :)

How resellers sell and use maintenance must be up to them.

Our beloved reseller had a customer who's hasp had failed, and they needed a replacement hasp. They had quit maintenance several years ago, and just wanted a replacement hasp for their older version, which I definitely know is a legitimate request that CNC will service.

However, the shark told them that according to CNC Software, they had to be back on maintenance, and pay for the replacement hasp. He charged over double for the replacement hasp, and made them pay the maintenance (which they didn't need to do).

Ah, I miss those days, like I miss a dose of cholera...  ;D
