24 seconds in flight

QuoteFrom the pull of the trigger, roughly 24 seconds elapsed before forward spotters heard the telltale plunk of a 422-grain copper bullet piercing the thin metal target.

The shooter was 4.4 miles away, a distance so great, the Earth's rotation came into play.

It was a new world record for a rifle shot, set by the Jackson-based Nomad Rifleman team led by Schott Austin and Shepard Humphries. The shot was made with a custom-built rifle chambered for the .416 Barrett cartridge.

Pretty cool

That's crazy! And to hit dead center is even crazier!

I wonder how much windage they had to put on it to account for the rotation of the earth
Did the article say, I haven't had time to read the whole thing?

They didn't say how much. But it's possible to figure out roughly..

Then convert to MRAD or MOA.

Ultra long range is cool, but when it takes you 69 shots to hit center it tells me there is a BIG mix of skill and luck to make it happen. The rail adapter they have for the scope is insane tho.

Wow...that is impressive no matter how many attempts it took.

Wind conditions over that long a range are wildly unpredictable, so good on them for dialing in a round from that extreme distance.

At that point it's almost an indirect fire weapon, like a mortar.

During World War 1 they used machine guns for indirect fire
The would lay them to drop fire onto road crossings, rail road yards, field kitchens and and other places were troops gathered then spray burst of fire into them from 1 or 2 miles away.

Bullet dropping at 32 feet per second squared for 24 seconds= A heck of a lot of drop.

Del.

I can eat 50 eggs.
