Well good news, they did buy a new computer. Bad news is it is a Dell Precision 3571 laptop. :wallbash:  :wallbash:  Is it an upgrade from my current Dell Precision 3550? I suppose so. Is it anywhere near what I asked for? not really.

I talked to my boss and he's going to have a conversation with management. My boss was on my side and thought they were just ordering what I got quoted. But apparently that memo got lost somewhere along the line. I feel like they could have at least had the courtesy to tell me they weren't getting what I asked for.

I'm hoping the conversation amounts to something, but at this point I'm not holding my breathe.

What are the specs on this new laptop? Did they at least get a decent video card in it?
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I don't have my hands on it yet. But our outside IT company is setting up all the software on it and the list he read off to me when I asked was:

32GB RAM, DDR5
Intel i9-12900H
NVIDIA T600
and I don't remember what the hard drive was

I'm probably over reacting a bit but I had high hopes for what I got quoted. You live and you learn I guess

Sorry to be reading this. I thought your boss caved far too easily.

gcode's rule #341... a computer is not ordered till you have a signed PO in your hand

That laptop is really going to struggle running complex Verify and Machine Sim stuff
especially if you hook that entry level video card up to your two 27 inch monitors

I would keep a fire extinguisher nearby

I checked this out on the Dell website
It's 15" $1600 laptop..
In stock configuration, it's got a 256g SSD drive and 16meg of ram

It will be OK for 2D lathe and 2D and simple 3D mill
If you are doing more than that, you'll find it's limits quickly.

The whole reason I wanted a new computer is because of the Mcam wait times. I kept track a couple times, in a 10 hour day I spend 45-60 minutes waiting for Mcam. That seems unacceptable to me but the money's not coming out of my wallet.

I guess it must be more important for solitaire to open half a second faster for the IT guys.  :headscratch:

Benchmark regen time for the new laptop 2 min 50sec (specs below). I'll give it this, this new laptop makes the old one (4min 50sec) look like junk. Though, based on other posts I think the computer I had quoted would have a regen time around 2min.

CPU Intel i7-12800H
RAM 32GB DDR5
SSD KIOXIA 512GB KBG50ZNS512G
GPU NVIDIA T600

About 6 months ago I asked for a new computer and quoted a pretty high end desktop. Management got me a dell precision 3571 laptop instead. I wasn't very happy about the decision because they didn't communicate with me in the slightest. But oh well, I took what they gave me and moved on.

Fast forward to last week. I just heard they've received enough complaints about how slow the new laptops are that they're looking into getting the programming department (7 guys) new computers. Go figure I wasn't asking to spend money for no reason.

Any bets what they get us this time?

I purchased a new machine from Xi Computers for home last week and spent the weekend putting it together
It has a liquid cooled overclocked i9 -13900FK 64g of DDR 3200 ram, an Nvidia A4500 video card
and 2 1 TB Samsung 990 PRO SSD's.

I haven't done a serious work with it yet but an initial run of the benchmark file came in at 2 minimizes 2 seconds
Verify launches much quicker than any machine I've ever run so I think that video card will prove to have been work the $$.

I just realized I ran this test with the Multithread Manager set a the default 4 threads and Priority set to normal.
This processor has 8 performance cores and 24 efficiency cores.
Better times may be achievable by cranking the thread and priority setting up

Well, since they are clueless and went with that Dell for your workstation, I'm going to bet they get another $1500 laptop.
If they're buying laptops, they need to spend at least double that for a good one.

Just an FYI for future reference: for those of us on a budget, I've always had good luck with PC's purchased from the Dell outlet site. You can't customize them at time of purchase as you can with the "new" stuff, but if you can take your time and keep checking their inventory there are some reasonably good deals to be had. I've bought both laptops and desktops (their "Precision" series machines) and have yet to be disappointed. Savings generally seem to be in the range of ~30% to 50% of new for machines that are perhaps (?) a year old or less.

I'm not usually a fan of previously-owned stuff, but in nearly all cases what has been delivered seems to be "as new" even if they call it "refurbished." The warranty is the same as new, also....

Yes you can make some good deals from Dell Outlet
I once bought a Precision Workstation that was listed as "Damaged"
If you went to the New section and built that machine it came in at $5800
I paid $2200 for it.
The "damage" turned out to be a slightly folded over corner on the back of the case.
You couldn't even see it once the tower was setup under my desk.
That dent saved me $3600
