I was thinking the same thing but They must have some sort of heavy duty leak protection.
I read earlier that years ago that was attempted with a wayward weather balloon and it took a week for it to come down.
I'm sure they could have come up with some method of preserving the payload so they could gather intelligence from it. Lord knows uncle Joey could use some of that.
On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me if the video shown was fake so everybody would think the payload was destroyed and they could retrieve it without anyone knowing.

"We" DO NOT want to retrieve it, at least not in a manner that would create public scrutiny. Should we do that (publically) "we" would have to then answer for why OUR tech (software AND hardware) is in it. Clinton most DEFINITELY doesn't want to answer for that and the incontinent shitbird currently occupying the oval office doesn't have the mental faculties to answer for it.

The other working theory as to why "we" did not behave appropriately when presented the countless opportunities to do so; the current administration AND several of it's most senior ranking members (Senator Dianne Feinstein - https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/details-chinese-spy-dianne-feinstein-san-francisco/ ) and Representative Eric Swallwell - https://www.npr.org/2020/12/18/948210355/fbi-briefs-reps-pelosi-mccarthy-on-rep-swalwells-ties-to-suspected-chinese-spy ) are SO deeply compromised the FULL truth regarding those situations and no doubt countless others  would be so damaging to the nation's s0-called leadership structure it could plunge us into a constitutional crisis of sorts - not truly a crisis because things are pretty clear in the Constitution regarding Chain of Command.... however, there have been allegations that Kamala Harris' husband (Doug Emhoff) connections through his partnership at the law firm of DLA Piper are problematic.

I've done a lot of digging and can't find anything truly objectionable. The facts about his law firm; 4,000 attorneys, "only" 2 with any ties to the CCP and they are located in Hong Kong so the fact there's only two in that office that we've sussed out is miraculous and by all appearances Kamala's husband is not in their chain of command, AND Real Estate and Entertainment matters are his forte. Unless somethign else of substance comes out regarding Emhoff, I consider that a dead avenue... which brings us to the Constitutional "crisis" of sorts... the Democrat Party would rather have a deeply compromised POTUS in Pedo Joe Biden than have Kamala Harris take over the reigns. So either the fact she's a prostitute and they are trying to keep that under wraps or there's something even more egregious they don't want getting out... crisi averted by allowing the balloon to gather whatever intel it was created to gather... or perform whatever "dry run" it was created to perform.
