What is it that they say about 3rd generation shop owners?

Hey @neurosis :

Uh oh....got a good story for us?

I can't remember where I first heard/read this (maybe over on Practical Machinist?), but the expression was "shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in 3 generations."

Another good one: "born on third base, but thought he hit a triple."

I worked under the 2nd gen for almost 20 years until he died of pancreatic cancer. It wasn't too bad. Working for the 2nd gen owner I mean.

I'd like to say that he was the secret to the shops success but the shop was mostly run by the foreman.  The shop owner would just show up, read email all day, take (drink) 2 hour lunches, and then leave after a 6 hour day. That's how it's supposed to be though, right?  Get the right people under you so that you don't have to work?

The foreman, who no longer works here, was here 7 days a week. That guy poured his life in to the shop but unfortunately for him, the shop owner died and his son took over so all of that work in the end, went unappreciated. I felt bad for him.

Wow-what happened to the foreman after gen 2 died? Has he retired/passed? Was he not compensated for years of going above and beyond? OT at least?

He retired. I don't think that he wanted to, I just don't think that he liked the direction the shop was headed.  His opinions were starting to take a back seat to people who had nothing invested in the shop.  Friends of the new owner.

I'm guessing that if things would have stayed the same he would have worked until he was too old to do it anymore.

We've been under third generation control for a couple years now. Sales are booming to the point that almost every non-critical part is being farmed out. We have bought a b-axis lathe that showed up last week, an 800mm horizontal which will be here in October and a new type of soldering machine for our copper assemblies is here. We're looking at a big laser cutter for sheetmetal right now and an automatic tube bender is being tested right now.

My company is a 3rd Generation Company. The 3rd Generation is running things mostly. The 4th Generation isn't too far off.

one third gen shop i worked for (i worked 2nd gen and bailed) theee girls (2nd gen had two girls) were more interested in other girls than the business. that was rumor more than fact but fact is they ran a 50 million dollar business into the ground. exists no more.
I would die to have a machine shop handed to me. BUT I would seriously need the past experience I currently have to not piss it away. and infastructure to fill the gaps that i suck at.. sales, customer service etc etc.
