There is a new respiratory illness going around that has veterinarians across the country on high alert. It's a mysterious illness that is leaving dogs struggling to breathe1. The symptoms of this illness are similar to that of canine influenza or kennel cough2. The incubation period of canine influenza is approximately two-to-four days from initial exposure to the dog flu virus. Viral shedding starts to decrease after the fourth day, but dogs with H3N8 remain contagious for up to 10 days after exposure, and dogs with H3N2 remain contagious for up to 26 days3. If you are a dog owner, you should familiarize yourself with the symptoms so that you know what to look for in the event of an outbreak in your area3.

Most dog owners don't vax their dogs for kennel cough unless they are in the habit of boarding them on a regular basis.

It's not an issue for us because my wife and I have a dog, and so do all of our kids, so when anyone goes on vacation we always leave the dog with a family member.
