And my phone was dead.

They (ATandT) said they screwed up. (maintenance)

But for some reason they took out several other competitors.

My understanding (and I could be dead wrong) is that there are two infrastructure (towers, lines, etc...)providers for cell service now; AT&T and Verizon. If you have ANY other cell provider you're piggybacking on one or the other. So, it stands to reason if AT&T goes down, then a number of other service providers go down as well.

So the majority of towers are owned by a handful of tower companies(American Tower, Crown Castle, and SBS are the biggest three) and they lease space on them to the phone companies, mainly ATT, Verizon, and TMobile. The three main networks then sell space on their networks to smaller companies like Boost, Cricket, etc.

My guess is one of the tower companies went down/targeted and that is why there is random issues with other networks as well.
