Quote from: neurosis on January 20, 2024, 12:05 PMI use it for tech support, hobby related stuff and comedy mostly.  I do use it for local information because there are people who work closely with local politicians, law enforcement, and other government agencies that post there. It's useful to get stories as they're happening or to understand the thought process behind policy etc. In a world full of anger porn reporting it's nice to understand why something is being done, even when you disagree with it, rather than having a bunch of foaming at the mouth idiots mischaracterize what's actually being done.

Uhh OK. :)

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

First reports are almost always wrong, lack context, and tend to be emotional.

Even Reddit suffers from the same things legacy media do; the idea that it's better to get it first than get it right.

True. I wouldn't rely on reddit to get to the bottom of a murder investigation.

There are times that it comes in useful like road closures, school lock downs, etc. You can get that info in real time rather than waiting on a news report.

There are also times where getting information from people who are standing there when it happened is more accurate than the initial news reports.

Two people standing g on a corner witness something. They will 99% of the time see that exact same thing differently.

Their "information " should be taken with a grain of salt.

Road closures an other inconveniences people may want to avoid... sure. Things of societal substance, grain of salt until a complete and thorough investigation.

Here in MN we have an app ran by MNDOT call MN511. It updates constantly, has road conditions, construction, closures, traffic cameras, plow cameras, etc to see if there us any issue on your drive. Completely free. Reddit is the last place I would ever look for road conditions.

Why? So he could fuck that up too?

The voting system on Reddit sucks. It encourages tribalism. Oh fuck, who am I kidding. Nobody wants to listen to differing opinions these days.  Maybe it's just following the trend.

There *are* conservative subs on there but they'll ban you for arguing different opinions similar to some of the far left subs.

Again, true. But often reporters are relying on witnesses to get the story anyway. You're getting it from them one way or the other but reddit is just faster.

Also, the PD and some local politicians (think Seattle Chop) don't always accurately report a story that leaves egg on their face. People sitting in the middle of it telling you what's going on seem like it could be more accurate.

I doubt Reddit is getting any of these interviews.

Right. Let's get those cities burning faster. Gotcha. 😜

At least when. The reporter gets the story and sifts through it, there's the remotest of chances some truth will come out of it. With Reddit and the rest of social media, no such barrier exists. It's just a free-for-all.

If I were to believe most people on here, you can't believe anything the media tells you.   :D

But yes, reddit is basically a free for all with no accountability.

There is no accountability for MSM and big tech companies either. The only real accountability is dollars, if they don't make any, they go broke.
