I'm pretty sure that this is the record for our shop in the near 30 years I've been here.

Since the 1st of January we've had 22 sick call-ins in a 17 person shop.

I don't know how the owner is keeping the doors open.

They've changed the standard.
People will call in sick for a simple headache now.

Where are you located?
There is a bug going around in my area (Thumb of Michigan). Nothing serious but I had it yesterday. It was gone in about 6 hours.
Made me feel like I was coming down with the flu but as quickly as it came, it went away.

The shop is located in Seattle.

I was pretty sick with the flu back in December and missed two days so there was definitely some kind of funk going around.

I think Tha 'Rona changed how many people view "illness". It pretty much gave people with the sniffles an excuse to call in.

I get it... we don't want to get each other sick. Especially now that the pharmaceutical companies pretty much hosed a ton of people's immune systems with their not-a-vax... but I think we've gone beyond what's reasonable at this point.

Regardless, survival of the fittest is on now, and it doesn't look good for a lot of folks.

We seem to have a new phenomenon here where if one person calls in sick, the others refuse to be outdone on sick days off. It's like dominoes.

We also have an aging crew and some of the older guys are constantly calling in sick.  We have one guy who called in 26 times last year but he averages 20+ call ins a year.

I do get the feeling that it's exactly as you say. People will call in now if they so much as have a hangnail or a too tight fitting sock.

We threw out attendance policies 2 years ago. It's come as you please.

Most of the guys are low income and don't GAF. They just call in.

Not much management can do, hands are tied.

We always have the guys who complain that they never have any money to do anything. Those are usually the same guys who never show up for work.

I sometimes feel like a fool for having 6 sick days left at the end of the year that I do not get paid for.
