Nah, I'm not just trying to win an argument.

I have always respected Doug, and everyone else here for that matter.
In fact I admire Doug's passion and his convictions.

It's just that when the discussion turns to the Scriptures I have found that letting them speak for themselves is always the best course of action.

Not to mention; it's a book written by men interpreted many times over.

If Dawn is good enough for baby ducks it should be good enough for 150 people at 30,000 feet in the air and 500 mph. Bunch of whiners if you ask me.

At least, we put the bolts in. Once Boeing removes that door to fix a faulty product we sent them, it's on them to put them back.

Quote from: neurosis on March 22, 2024, 06:59 AMYou make it sound as if you need religion or you just wonder around leading aimless, pointless lives.  ugh.

LOL. good! that's what I was going for. I've tried it both ways, and you have described it exactly as I would

QuoteNot to mention; it's a book written by men interpreted many times over.

But largely interpreted the same way. God created us with a beauty in mind. We discarded that beauty. He sent His Son to give us that beauty back.  Discussions such as whether to eat meat or not eat meat are just people trying to love God as best they see fit and they are worth discussing.

But the book itself is fascinating. While it might look to some like a collection of odd stories or myths and to others like miracles and history, it still all points to a saviour.

Here is an example: Abraham is called by God to sacrifice his only son. No reason given. Abraham, in his sorrow decides to honor God's request. He and Isaac walk up Mount Moriah to offer the sacrifice. Isaac carries the wood. On the way up there Isaac asks Abraham, "We have everything for the sacrifice, but we have no Lamb." Abraham answers, "God, himself, will provide the Lamb."

Just before Abraham offers Isaac for the sacrifice, God stops Abraham and says, "Now I can see that you did not withhold your only son from me. Abraham and Isaac finds a ram tangled by the horns in the bushes and they offer it as a sacrifice.

You can look at that as a myth if you want. you can look at it like real history. Either way, It's hard not to see, Jesus in that story. Mount Moriah, is where Jersualem sits today. Isaac carried the wood up the mountain. So did Jesus. Abraham said that God, himself would provide the Lamb. A ram is not a lamb. Jesus was the Lamb.

This is why I say, it's all one story.  If God exists, we are all wandering aimlessly if we are not living our lives for Him. But if God does not exist, we are here randonly and there is no distinct purpose to life. So, yeah, you described it well.  :)

As Augustine put it, "Our hearts are restless till they rest in you, Lord."

I guess now it makes more sense to me now that people are attacking Christianity.  I don't know if that's the general consensus between Christians or just your own personal beliefs, but if someone tells me that my life is meaningless because I don't believe the same things they do, I can see how that could lead to some resentment.  :D

If that's what it sounded like I meant, forgive me. Your life is not meaningless.

What I was talking about was the perception of meaning. My perception is, I believe I was created by God to fulfill his plan for me. But for someone who thinks they were not created by a creator but are here because of random events over billions of years I would just ask, what gives you meaning to your life? Is it simply to fulfill natural desires? to be comfortable? to procreate? to feel good? Sam Harris and a lot of the other new athiest authors and speakers believe that our thoughts, our emotions, and therefore our actions are due to random firing neurons, and the idea of a free will is simply an illusion. it's athiest idea that life has no purpose or meaning, I was simply using their argument.

I believe in God therefore I believe every single person's life has meaning and purpose whether that person believes in God or not. All I want to do is help people see what their purpose is.

Their argument is more that you don't need religion for your life to have purpose or meaning. Sam had a debate with Ben Shapiro on that exact subject.

I don't know that I agree. But my disagreement is more in what leads people to feel fulfilled. To me, if that happens to be religion, then that's what you should do. I don't think that personal fulfillment or the feeling of leading a meaningful life is a one size fits all.
