Great questions, I'll try to be objective and mind you this is the experience of someone who is in great health, although at this point I've had two major surgeries and broken bones in california.

The taxes thing is something that people always assume is much higher .My taxes in Canada were virtually identical, within %1, but then adding in paying into a medical plan and my overall deductions, I was paying overall about $200 a month more than I was in Canada.
Medical expenses haven't been too bad, generally a wash but some years with co-pays/deductions when myself or my wife had an issue, we paid between 500-1000 a year.    The bigger cost is the time and energy spent looking at plans, thinking about things, dealing with people calling, the administrative nonsense of insurance and billing etc. etc.
Not only did I never pay anything extra in Canada, I didn't have to think about it ever.

I now make a lot more money than I did in Canada, but I've been working here for five years, and given my friends back home who are senior engineers at decent companies, we make about the same.  
living expenses in California SUCK. But Kitchener-Waterloo (where I was living) has also gotten expensive.

Overall, nothing has really changed that much except I have a smaller house, and I pay a bit more more, and have a little less freedom to chose.

But also all my friends and neighbours had their health covered.
Here, maybe half have Obamacare now, without it they went years without? That sucks.  That's why I push public healthcare. Give people an equal chance because you don't always get to pick what health issues you have.

I'm confused, sounds like you would make the same in Canada, you now have a smaller house and cost of living in California is slightly more, and god forbid you need a specialist you'll pay through the nose. Why not go back?
