They are going to ship another one via expedited air so it doesn't go through the port but the machine waiting on the drive will be down for few more days now.

Something as simple as a power supply has to be shipped from Japan? You mean to tell me they don't have a handful on the shelf here? And it's a fricken power supply, figure out the specs and buy one from Digikey.

Quote from: ghuns on October 01, 2024, 11:18 AMThe current problem with port automation is that all the equipment comes from China. Buying it from them is a massive national security risk. They would build in backdoors that allow them to shut it down.

It's a proprietary power supply for the drives. Not something that can be sourced from anyone but Okuma. Normally they are in stock in the USA or can be rebuilt/exchanged quickly. there must have been a run on this particular drive for it to need to come from Japan. We would normally order the expedited route but the one stuck in port was on it's way already for America inventory when we ordered it.

I read this morning that the head union boss, who is threatening to cripple the economy, was previously acquitted of RICO charges after the body of a mob boss turned witness was found dead in the trunk of a car. Unions are corrupt to their core, all of them. They should be dismantled. Especially any public sector unions.

Look at the bright side.. once the strike gets settled you'll have a spare power supply

It will go back into Okuma inventory. It was supposed to arrive there before shipping here.

I cannot imagine being so insecure over automation that I would go on strike to try to prevent it from coming.

Striking because you are threatened by automation is a guaranteed way of making the automation get introduced faster. I've yet to see an operator of anything outperform a automated function in the long term. Hell we would all be still cranking handles on conventional machining equipment if it wasn't for automation. Automate the hell out of these ports I say.

I remember the backlogs during chinavirus because of a longshoreman's 4th hand exposure to someone who had a cough. That got them 10 days off, paid. Fuck them. Automate the shit out of those ports.

We just ran the numbers for last year. We have Scytec for machine monitoring. We looked at all of the in-cycle hours last year and divided it by direct shop labor costs for the year to keep those machines running. Our labor cost comes out to about $4-8/hour depending on lathes vs mills.

Yup look at china... all automated ports. No stopping this. This will only accelerate the efforts to automate.

The reality of the world is that over 50% of the jobs out there can and will be automated in the next 10-20 years. There is no stopping this. Ideally this will lead to a massive deflation in prices because of the massive gains in productivity but for some reason i don't think this will be the case.....

Also, fuck that bastard that thinks he can Threaten the US economy by blocking / striking.  Afraid of some automation and guys holding gates are worth $40 an hour.  At that point you're an enemy of the State.  Unions = worthless IMHO

People are panic buying toilet paper at Costco's again.

Isn't costo's toilet paper made in the US?
