Are you still in the top 10% of earners?

This year has been slow so I won't make as much as the last few years. I have hit that number for the top 10% before but won't this year. My income has doubled in the last 10 years, however I also went back and finished my EE degree. I spent 4 years doing 10-20 hours of homework every week to get that degree. It was a big sacrifice to my life and family but it is now paying off. My position now is controls and automation engineering. I just happen to do that in a a machine shop so I still occasionally program and setup machines as well.

We have kids working here now demanding $30 plus dollars an hour and couldn't machine their way out of a wet paper bag. If you handed them a drawing and a piece of material they would be completely lost.

I don't even know what a programmers position is worth these days since I've been stuck in this bubble for 30 years.
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

The local help wanted adds state $35-50,
We are running an add stating $40-50 and get zero qualified candidates.
edit... but our add is wrong... it's say  top Catia skills /Mastercam a plus
Back when we were trying to be a Catia shop. Catia grammers were asking $80 to 120
but all the good ones weren't interested in a job.. they wanted to contract.
I don't know what they are doing since Cali outlawed contracting.

When I was made manufacturing manager and put on salary back in 2008 or so I did the calculation at the end of the year and my "promotion" cost me about $28k in overtime. Plus, I had to deal with all of the personnel BS that comes with management. When I would point this out, my boss would throw me a 5% raise every few years, which wouldn't even keep up with inflation.

It took moving to a different state and changing industries to get a significant raise (40%), something I wish I would have done many years ago. Still not in the top 10% though.

At my current job when we were just starting up the shop the owner asked if I wanted to have shop personnel report to me. I said hell no!. I don't want to deal with the BS. I said I'll be the tech guy to solve tech problems, but no people problems.

They've been trying to move me into management for many years.
I keep telling them it's a bad idea.... they'll lose a good programmer and get a mediocre manager,
and I'll lose $30-40K/year  in OT  going on salary.
With the unexpected passing of our Manufacturing Manager, I've inherited some of his duties by default.
I can't wait till they hire a new manager.

Quote from: Jeff on October 03, 2024, 03:02 AMTop 10%? What machinist makes minimum $80/hour? I'll send them my resume!

The only way a machinist can make a decent living is with OT, we typically work 5 10's and 4-6 on Saturday.
Been at it for 45 years, Covid was a nice break  .

Now as a programmer that's a different scenario, less hours and salary..

I'm almost to the 10%, maybe in a few more years...

I'm not even in a manufacturing environment anymore.  I'm probably in the top 15%.  My wife has a great career and that helps as well.

If I combine my g/f and my incomes, I might come close?  She's a teacher, but she teaches in Seattle so is paid pretty well.
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.
