With manifest v2 end of life coming up early next year, any of you guys using chrome browser that rely on any kind of ad blocker, what are your plans for future web browsing?

This should affect any browser based on Chrome, including browsers like Vivaldi and Brave. Brave uses it's own built in ad blocking but can't be certain that it won't be affected by this.

Time to move on from Chrome? If you haven't already.

QuoteWhat makes MV3 so controversial
The planned phase-out of MV2 and transition to MV3 dragged on for years, as the new platform faced strong resistance from developers, who argued it was excessively limiting.

One of the biggest issues for ad blockers and major differences between MV2 and MV3 is that the latter is more restrictive than the former. In MV3, Chrome removed the blocking version of webRequest API, which was used by all ad blockers as well as by many extensions designed to protect privacy and security. The webRequestAPI was replaced with the declarativeNetRequest API. The latter is much less effective at blocking ad and tracking requests, because it gives the browser the final say on modifying requests, rather than the ad-blocking extension. In the case of the declarativeNetRequest API, the extension simply announces or "declares" a set of rules by which the browser should respond.

VPN's don't block cookies, ad trackers, or prevent browser fingerprinting.  Do you use Encrypted DNS?

One of the main things I use ublock origin for is element blocking on web sites. That functionality will no longer be available in chrome when manifest v2 is phased out.

+1 so far to Brave. Has "private" and Tor too (LoL @ is there "private anything").
And running 2x linux installs onto Macbooks, and 1x chromebook that I might strip out load linux on too....
unsure of that as chromebook is limited drive size etc but i detest google and MS as much as Autodesk (getting back on topic for a manufacturing forum :hrhr: )

I have been using Nord VPN for 2 years..encrypted servers and traffic, no logs...

Though with their latest price increase this year I may explore Proton VPN moving forward.

Since brave has built in ad blocking I'm going to stick with it for a bit.  I use 4 different browser for different things.

I don't have linux installed on any of my PC's anymore. I was a die hard FreeBSD user for years but it just became too inconvenient to keep updated.  I don't care for any linux distro other than Arch after using FreeBSD and Arch is as much of a pain in the ass as FreeBSD.

Dunno.
I looked and liked Ubuntu in principle as it came free loaded with things (ref @mkd)
Then settled for Kubuntu as it has the KDE front end etc - really nice.
TBF i love it.

If you really like Nord, go get a burner credit card and create a new email address so you can start a new account at the discounted price.

Proton has been my best experience with a VPN.

Always fast, Tor is built in, and they call it DNS Leak Protection. Not to sound like a youtuber plugging some sponsor, but they have an encrypted cloud ecosystem that is pretty damn good too, drive, calendar, password manager. Have not used the wallet feature yet, as I avoid digital/contactless payment other than physical cards.

Firefox is serving me well, home and office, not planning on changing any time soon.

I've been using OperaGX for a couple of years now, I like it. But the back end is Chrome.
I'll probably go back to Firefox.

Tried a few since ditching chrome. Brave was ok, Ungoogled Chromium was my favourite, but it lacked any form of auto-updates at the time I used it.

Firefox seems to have the best balance of privacy/security/ease of use/customization. I went Tree Style instead of tabbed browsing, and has it EVER made me more productive as far as research. I have about 50+ tabs up usually, and I've gotten used to the cascading structure. It's just like having toolpath groups for my browser, lol

I usually have 15-20 open daily at work.
One of my favorite features of OperaGX is single clicking on a tab returns that page to the top.
SO nice.
It's a little busy for some people with all of the customization you can go with it but mine is pretty plain jane.

I will never forget the ship's wheel icon against that teal desktop of my Gramma's windows 95 machine. It was down in the basement beside Grampa's HAM equipment. We could play on it, and felt pretty special as a little kid to play with a computer that we knewthought was JUST for games. The look and feel of those old beige rigs and CRT's... unbridled nostalgia.

Shiiet, look at me, sounding like you old boys talking about the black and white paper tape CNC days, lol
