Quote from: neurosis on May 23, 2025, 06:14 AMI just read that an annual registration fees of $250 for electric vehicles and $100 for hybrid vehicles is in this bill. They're basically just punishing hybrid and electric vehicle owners.

Is that on top of the regular annual registration? Wild.

Yea.. I'm still waiting to find out how they would implement this. I assume that you'll have to report it on your tax return?

There is a justification for this. We do pay a federal gas tax that supports highway and bridge construction. Electric vehicles don't have to pay a gas tax so it makes sense to hit them with a tax?  Hybrids.. I can't get my head around that one.  I have a gas vehicle that gets over 40mpg. Hybrids only average a little more than that.

For us, we pay ~$120 per year for a car, and ~$150 for a light truck/SUV, I think a commerical van is more, not sure. You have to either go to the Ministry of Transportation, or pay online, and you can pay for 2 years up front. We used to get new stickers for the plates each year too, but they phased it out and it's digital now. Do you guys not have to pay your individual states for registrations each year? We have nothing like a set amount per year federally, but gas is taxed like a mofo. Premium is $1.50/L at the moment, for reference, and that's cheapest its been in 3 or 4 years.

Also, you lucky SoB, my Lexus gets 18-20 mpg, lol

Man,
I'd love to get punished like that
Registration on my wife's small Acrua suv is $950/year
and my little Mazda3 2.5 Turbo AWD is $600/year

I can't imagine what people buying full sized pickup trucks are paying now.

The State registration fee for a lot of these electric cars is over $1000 a year. This federal fee will be on top of that. I think that a 40,000 dollar vehicle is around $800 a year in Washington State depending on where you live.

Not to mention that they (Washington State) are now adding an additional $250 $300 a year for electric vehicles.

If you live in Washington State there is going to be zero incentive to buy an electric or hybrid vehicle. They'll be more expensive to drive than gas powered.

This is for an electric vehicle costing $40,000 in my area.

And this is before the additional $300 a year is added for the budget passed this week and the additional federal tax. Next year that yearly cost is going to be closer to $1500

That's wild you guys. I figured it would be zero and I was going to be the butt of the joke for paying 120 per year. I mean we have the almighty CARBON TAX up here, but nobody knows what it is applied to or when you pay it, just that we get 4x ~$250 cheques per year as rebates for the increased cost of living.

We have a carbon tax here in Washington State. It's ridiculous. It caused the gas prices to go up almost .80 cents a gallon. I think we pay the second highest gas tax in the nation behind G's State. It won't show that because technically, it's not considered a gas tax since its a carbon tax passed on to customers.

The last year we paid registration in the PRK... 2022 I think, my wife's 2018 Suburban was ~$650/yr.

In the Free State, we pay $192, WITH a Zion National Park specialty vanity plate. Oh, that includes the smog check too.

I remember last year they came out with a "least affordable places to live in the US" ranking and I think that Utah was #3 on that list.  I wonder why that is? It doesn't sound like it should cost that much to live there?

It's because of all those CA a-holes that are moving there and driving up house prices.

I just got the registration notice for our BMW 540i and it was like $107, but we live in the poor part of CA.
