I showed up at work this morning at about 2am, like usual.

At about 2:45 I get a phone call from the shop owner telling me whatever I do, don't go outside. Apparently there were about 9 Seattle police outside with 3 dogs searching for someone who was trying to break in to the building.

I didn't hear any of the ruckus. The cops had already nabbed one of the supposedly two men who were looking for a way in.

When the cops finally came in to the building they piled in 10 deep armed with rifles.

Too much excitement for 2am.

In the end, it turned out to be a homeless guy sawing up pallets beside our building to use for firewood. There was no second guy.

That's wild! All that because a hobo was cutting up pallets.
Once when I was visiting in Spokane WA. a couple years ago I got to see a "tactical unit" search a couple blocks all around my cousin's house I was visiting, kinda freaky.
I can't imagine 2 in the morning glad it all worked out for you.
I enjoy your conversations with everybody.
stay golden  :)

Even worse, our shop and a neighboring shop put those pallets out for anyone to take.

Cutting them up at 2am probably wasn't the best idea, but the guy was probably freezing his ass off.

Christmas day mid '90's i get a 2am alarm call. It was a stormy night and as nearest to work, i got the short straw.
I'm stood outside in the pissing howling rain for 10 minutes and a cop van pulls up.
They jump out and get instantly firey with me and it was only when i'm shaking the factory keys at them, shouting "if i was a fkin burglar, do you think i'd be waiting for you" they realised i was the janitor....
I opened the lobby, went in and turned off the alarm, looked round and they were still outside.
I asked them if they were thinking about actually coming in to search the place, and the reply was "after you", so I had to open the main door and walk in first putting all the lights on.
And there you are thinking Wiggum and Barbrady are best in the world....

I had a customer in Seattle called M9 Defense that made body armor. The owner was a strange, energetic man. Every public address for their facility was wrong because they claimed mercenaries cut a whole in their roof in their last facility and stole a bunch of product and prototypes

I worked for a guy years ago who made glock accessories. This was before every shop in the NW started making gun parts.

His shop would routinely get broken in to. They had to keep their address hidden and had moved the shop several times over the years because of it. The name of the company was Aro-Tek - the owner was  Morris Dagley.  I think they're still around and the guys son ended up taking the business over. I'm not sure if they're still manufacturing glock parts.

Aro-Tek are still around. They have several Matsuura machines. I believe Mr. Dagely's son has left the company.

We had a former co-worker that had a shop in a certain part of California known for it's cartel infiltration before he came to work for us. He was just about to sign the paperwork to get his FFL and an ATF and FBI agent paid him a visit... or so I was told. They explained if he were to do that, his company would be taken over by force by the drug cartels and he would be forced to manufacture firearms for them. And neither the ATF, nor the FBI would be able to protect him and his family. "Would you still like to apply for an FFL sir?" Ummmmm, that's a negative ghost rider. He closed up shop and came to work for us shortly after that.

His son just had open-heart surgery over the weekend. I've known Zhaun since the 80's. When I started working for Morris, I didn't know that he was Zhauns dad.  The last time I saw Zhaun in person he was at a Mastercam roll-out and was still running the shop. That was several years ago.

I figured that Morris was getting too old to be working anymore. He was in his 40's (maybe 50's) when I worked for him and that was in 1991ish. They couldn't afford Matsura's back in those days :D

We had a break in here about 12 years ago.
The IT guy called me about 10pm on a Sunday night and said the servers had gone down.
Sunday was the only night there was no night shift.
He'd was out on a date and the servers texted him that there was no power and they were shutting down.
He asked me to met him there because he didn't have a key.
I met him and we went in the front door.
All the tool boxes and inspection equipment was staged at the back rollup door.
The break room refrigerators and a bunch of computers were staged at the back door as well.
We backed out and called the cops.
They showed up quickly, but the burglars were gone. I think they went out the back as me and the IT guy came in the front.
The cops searched the place, didn't find anybody then brought in K9's.
I told the K9 commander not to send his dogs in cause the chips on the floor would cut up their feet.
He told me to fuck off and sent in his dogs. The floors were swept, but there were tons of chips under some machines.
They first K9 officer in sent his dog under a big VTL and came back 5 minutes later carrying his dog,
who's feet were shredded.  :(

The burglars had first accessed the roof and put trash bags over the security cameras, then entered the building via
a rooftop access panel. The first thing they did was kill power to the IT room, thinking it would disable the alarms and interior cameras. It did, but they didn't know the servers would text the IT guy about the power failure.

It turned out it was an inside job. They missed one camera inside the shop and it recorded video of a couple of the guys before the power went down.

Wow. I knew Zhaun was stepping away from the business maybe a month or two ago... hope everything goes well for him. Not sure what he's up to. I just knew he was leaving. Zhaun was really cool to me. Their IT guy... not so much. I think I get into ummmm spirited discussions with IT guys more than all the other departments combined and there's nothing that's even a close second. Funny how IT guys think they know everything... just ask 'em... just because something has an ethernet port.

Forgot about that break in.

Poor doggo. They always pay the price for our hubris.

According to Zhauns wife, the surgery went well. It's scary to see people my age having this type of heart problems. This is the second friend in a year that's almost died from heart related problems.

Now I kinda wonder what he's doing if he's not running the shop. He's played in a Motley Crue cover band for years but I can't imagine that's how he's making his living.

Yeah.. I think he's Nikki Sixx right?

Cover bands only pay so much and unless you're either independently wealthy or you are on the cruise circuit full time, it's a tough way to make  a living.

Friend I grew up with does make a living as a musician. Not a very good one, but he and his wife make it work. He gets session work from time to time, during the summer months spends a fair amount of time on cruises, and of course parties.
