Quote from: Smit on April 21, 2026, 11:12 AMI expect the existing cartels will probably just add that product to their existing business plan. They already have the infrastructure.
And there's the problem.  Instead of being unhealthy it will be dangerous.  And lead to their customers trying some of their other 'products'.  Same thing happened with weed.  As a 14-y-o it was easier to get weed than alcohol.  A regulated (alcohol) market could keep us youngsters out.  And the people old enough didn't want to risk providing it to us because they had a privilege to protect.  Weed already illegal, only a little more illegal to furnish a minor.  But with a legal, regulated market for cannabis you have a safer product, totally lacking in hippie/dog hair, mold, etc. and it is taxed, but not more expensive because the risk pricing is removed.  And the consumer doesn't have to deal with 'businessmen' who also have harder drugs, and probably weapons combined with paranoia, never a good mix.

Quote from: mowens on April 21, 2026, 10:13 AMI'm not sure what I think. There is no doubt that smoking and vaping kill people.
I was just reading about the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma paying billions in fines for their part in the opioid epidemic and the company itself being dissolved. Of course, most of the money is going to the government and lawyers not the people who were or whose families were injured.
Free fiss.

I seem to remember a study from a few years back that the gist of it was while smokers are more expensive to treat on an annual basis, they die young enough that they "save" the system the massive costs of caring for the elderly

Too many fuckin people anyways. I say encourage smoking.

Quote from: Bucky Cornstarch on April 21, 2026, 10:12 AMThe only thing a ban on smokes and vapes will do is ensure that every person the ban applies to will try smoking and vaping at least once.
Quote from: mowens on April 21, 2026, 10:26 AMsomething that won't even give you a buzz.
Some smokers started underage, just because we weren't allowed to, but the adults could.  So somewhere between playing grownup and doing it to prove they couldn't tell us what to do.
That's part of the 'rush' but there is a physiological response to the chemicals, and of course very addictive.

Be prepared for taxes to go up. I know in The People's Republik of Kommieforniastan they RELY on the cigarette tax money.. and they tax the hell out of it, and it goes up every year.

I'll bet we do... none of us smoke and we don't drink much so we probably don't notice it. Maybe a case of beer between 5 adults over the course of a year. Maybe.

Fun fact, the nannies in The People's Republik of Kommieforniastan banned those tobacco pouch things not sure exactly what they are... but we have to smuggle a certain brand and flavor from Utah for my oldest son in the PRK. We usually take like 3 logs to him every few months. He probably sells them to his buddies at 4x the price.

And that is why bans are both ineffective and dangerous.  Now you 've been roped into the illicit trades.  And you are armed to the teeth and paranoid, proving my point from the top of this page, exactly.    8)

At least you have a mirror.
Others seem to lack that tool of introspection.    8)
