My best client just sent me some parts to quote that are beyond the capability of the equipment I currently have access to, to make or to measure. I'd like to help them find the right supplier. The parts are about a half inch long, less than 1/4" diameter augers, with .0002" profile tolerance. Quantities up to 50 at this point. Anyone up to the task? This is a great customer and they've always paid me on time.

Ask for the stars, settle for the moon .
Making it is one thing. proving it is another.
Wonder if a CMM house would even touch that tolerance.
it would be a good job for a HSM200LP, which is stupid accurate.

Or one of these.

Then one of these to check them and prove you made what was asked of you.

I would quote them according to purchasing said equipment plus building a double clean room system keeping relative humidity and temperature controlled to extreme accuracies. Machine would go on a Double isolated foundation at least 6 foot thick with 50% larger area than required with pylons going down 30 feet to ensure enough controlled isolation from any external sources. CMM and Machine would be in the same room on seperate isolation pads. Then I would spend a good month developing the process to make said parts. Now you have the process down and good to go.

^^^now THAT is stupid accurate

bet the customer is expecting >10k price for that batch. :harhar:

I have an old friend that works within about a half mile of a railroad track. They have a proper foundation. Followed the builder's specs to the letter. They can always optically tell on parts when running finish passes and a train goes by, it shows up. It does measure on the profilometer though.

When I was taking my apprenticeship some guys from Johnson and Johnson were part of the program. They were making the contact lens molds and other items. They had one grinder that was 4 miles from the nearest highway, but could always tell then big truck were cruising by. They had to put in an isolation pad that was 10' thick with 50' pylons due the soil conditions in Florida. I was blown away how accurate all of that needs to be to make a contact lens.

When I was in tech college one of the guys in with me was working at a precision grinder making custom air bearings and the like. They had massive concrete bases with pilings deep into the ground but also had the machines issolated floating on air bearings. They had seizmic analyzers sensing ground vibration and would shut down if it got too high. Most of their super high precision work was done in the middle of the night when traffic was lower.

mayday

we have Miyano, Fastcut, and Doosan lathes on the show room floor ready for sale
