Anyone plan on upgrading to Windows 11 when it becomes available?

Windows 11 will leave millions of PCs behind, and Microsoft is struggling to explain why

Microsoft's big security push is complicated

QuoteMicrosoft has had six years to prepare for the launch of Windows 11, but the company is still struggling to explain its new hardware requirements. Windows 11 will officially support Intel 8th Gen Coffee Lake or Zen 2 CPUs and up, leaving behind millions of PCs that were sold during the launch of Windows 10.

It's an unusual surprise if you purchased a new PC for Windows 10, or perhaps you have a perfectly capable machine that's even older. Windows 11 will require Intel 8th Gen Coffee Lake or Zen 2 CPUs and up, TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) support, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage.

QuoteAfter much confusion last week, Microsoft attempted to explain its hardware requirements again yesterday, and it sounds like the main driver behind these changes is security. Coupled with Microsoft's hardware requirements is a push to enable a more modern BIOS (UEFI) that supports features like Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module).

When you combine TPM with some of the virtualization technologies that Microsoft uses in Windows, there's an understandable security benefit that we've discussed in detail previously. Microsoft claims that a combination of Windows Hello, Device Encryption, virtualization-based security, hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI), and Secure Boot "has been shown to reduce malware by 60 percent."

I have a Windows Surface I don; use for much
Assuming I can upgrade it, I will, though I won't do the Tech Preview releases
Eventually we will have no choice but to upgrade but that is 5+ years away

The only thing I saw on Microsoft's web site that would have disqualified my PC was its processor was not on the list of compatible processors.  Curiously though, it was also not on the list for compatible processors for windows 10 which it runs perfectly fine.  My guess is that the list is just tested and verified compatible, not exclusively compatible.  Microsoft would tick off a HUGE part of their user base were they to not allow their next OS to run just because of processor generation.

Is is true that Win11 will be subscription only? I don't recall where I heard that.
Using MC2023

All I've been able to find, is that it's free to upgrade from 10 to 11.  I'm not sure what it's going to cost if you have to purchase it to build a new PC.

I do know a couple of local PC stores that sell OEM versions of Windows but you have to buy a computer part with it to make it legit.  Not sure if that was the case for 10 or will be for 11.  I was able to upgrade all of my Windows 7 PC's to 10 for free. Or I should say that I installed Windows 10 using a Windows 7 license. I wonder if those same licenses will work for 11.

I have read that it will require an active internet connection and a Microsoft account.  Those will be deal breakers for many.

MS has released an app that tests your hardware to see if your PC is Win11 compatible
I haven't done that to my Surface yet
I think anything below a 7 series chip is a no go

Probably mainly power users.  The bulk of their base couldn't care less, already have a Microsoft ID and their PC's already phone home.

I heard you can't upgrade to Win 11 un less you have had both Covid vaccine shots.

They pulled the compatibility checker

I think they only verified series 7 and above, not that they'll exclude everything below series 7.

Anyone planning to accept a kick in their nut-sack when it becomes available?  :harhar:

Seriously though, yeah it seems to be heading in the direction where even your Windows OS will be subscription based.
I generally don't upgrade ANYTHING Windows until I have to.
They always promise the next version will be better, and they always disappoint the poor slobs who believe that!  :harhar:

Seems like they have a dud ever other version.  Windows 10 has been pretty decent so I expect that 11 is going to be the dud.  :D

Win10 did have a very rocky start.. the auto upgrade feature was a real PIA for a while
It's pretty solid now though. Crashes are rare and I almost never see the dreaded BSofDeath
At some point we have no choice but to upgrade.
I believe MC2022 is the last version that will run on Win7
so you will have to go to Win10 next year if you want to stay current with Mastercam

Perfect!
Now when Farcebook and Twitter un-person you, they can notify Microsofty to de-computer you.  :popo:    :secret:

One more reason to unFacebook and unTwitter your life while you can

I read that Farcebook is now warning users about any "extremists friends" they may have
I wouldn't know as I unFarcebooked myself last fall and have never even considered a Twitter account
