Do you personally know anyone in the US Armed Services that would be part of any combat operations?

Quote from: beej on October 01, 2025, 06:59 AMI'm no expert but when people join the military based on an idea of "be all you can be" they are enlisting at least partially because they want pushed to be better than they are.

Most of the friends I know who joined the military, joined because they were poor and didn't have many other options. They saw it as an opportunity for educational benefits and job training so they would hopefully fit in to some kind of career when they finished their service.

I did have one friend who joined out of what could have been considered patriotism, and I'll put it in his own words, to go kill sand n!%*ers.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

they had other options. If you come from a poor family, you can go to a trade school for almost nothing and have a pretty good job in 2 years. For example in 2 years you can be a lineman. And lineman bring home a pretty good salary and is for the most part recession proof.

Trade school wasn't free, and recruiters are good with their propaganda. Desert Storm was just getting under way so they were putting it in to overdrive. I remember seeing recruiters at every shopping mall.

You guys make it sound like it's a bad thing to join the military. It's not. There are lots of great experiences and friendships. It's a good place to learn discipline and responsibility.

I'm sure not everybody has a positive experience though.

LOL. You don't know much.  I bet it's like a 15% marriage success rate with career military personnel.

If he had stayed married to the same woman and never touched alcohol you'd like him, then? My gut feeling is that his alcoholism or marital troubles have nothing to do with your respect. In fact, I'd go so far as to wager, that if you shared political beliefs, you'd admire him for overcoming those vises.

Yeah maybe but it's fun to complain about him like republicans complain about democrats.
That and he seems like a real turd.

Fair enough, I wish we could just debate policy.
