Wow.  That level of honesty from this administration is saying the quiet parts out loud.  Impressed at the stones on this one.

Not too bright are ya?
The power lies in the hands of Congress, and only 4 Democrats voted to keep the lights on.

No not bright at all, the Dems turned the lights off.  Can't see a f---ing thing!

Quote from: CNCAppsJames on October 03, 2025, 09:45 AMCan't be having that pesky context laying around.
(quoted from a different thread, but I think appropriate here since both 'sides' are claiming the other caused the shutdown.)

So from what I can tell the Repugs are single-talking-point about illegal aliens being enrolled in Medicaid, but:

"Undocumented immigrants ... don't qualify for comprehensive Medicaid coverage, Medicare or the Children's Health Insurance Program. And they can't purchase federally subsidized health plans on exchanges backed by the Affordable Care Act. ... There are immigrants on Medicaid in the United States. So-called "noncitizen enrollees" in Medicaid accounted for 6% of the total, according to KFF, a nonprofit that conducts research and polling on health policy.  Not being a citizen isn't the same as residing in the United States illegally" (source: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/10/01/government-shutdown-medicaid-undocumented-immigrants-claim/86435684007/)

The Dems are concerned that "Medicaid spending cuts approved as part of Trump's major tax-cut legislation. An estimated 7.5 million will lose coverage under the program for lower-income families and the disabled over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office."  (source: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/10/01/shutdown-sticking-points-medicaid-obamacare/86463181007/)

The other sticking point is the end-of-year expiration of ACA subsidies, making insurance prohibitively expensive for many more millions.

"If Congress does not act by the end of the year, health insurance costs will increase dramatically for many of the 24 million Americans who get their coverage through Obamacare, known formally as the Affordable Care Act, according to the research organization KFF.

The impact would be most acute in Republican-controlled states that have not expanded the Medicaid health plan for the poor.

Democrats argue that federal subsidies for Obamacare, which expire Dec. 31, should be extended as part of keeping the government open − otherwise, premiums could double, KFF warns."  (source: ibid)

Repugs argue that the spending bill should be passed and that those issues can be addressed separately.  But the Dems know that they will just be steamrolled again, so they are doing what the Repugs taught them about how to create some leverage with a slight minority.

I'm not saying I agree with the procedure, I'm just saying they are left with little choice.

But what I am wondering the most is why are the Repugs using the excuse of (fabricated, made-up, non-existent) illegals as an excuse to cut or eliminate health coverage for the 93% of Medicaid enrollees who ARE citizens?

TLDR...

:coffee:

Both sides are terrible when it comes to the appropriations/budget.

That kinda blows his entire parrot talking point wide open eh?

Not to mention they forgot about the new work requirements. Many people sucking off the gov't teet are perfectly able to get a job and pay their own way, they're just too fucking lazy to do so.

Besides, they can just re-enroll and see if they get it. Stop acting like everyone that's being cut is an 85 year old woman in a wheelchair.

The majority of families receiving SNAP benefits, have at least one person in the family working.  Also, the majority of SNAP benefits go to children, elderly, and the disabled. I believe that number of families receiving medicaid, something like 80% have at least one working adult in the family.

Maybe we should just force people who can't afford to have children to be sterilized or to give them away?

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

So what's your point?
The ones that are perfectly capable of working need to be taken off of SNAP.

or perhaps the government should just not subsidize poor personal choices. That should perhaps, be left to private charities?

Quote from: Jeff on October 07, 2025, 03:48 AMSo what's your point?

The point is, most of the benefits go to children, elderly, or the disabled.

You made the comment "Stop acting like everyone that's being cut is an 85 year old woman in a wheelchair. "  When the right acts like the majority of people receiving benefits are gaming the system.

There are already limitations on government assistance programs. People capable of working, who don't have children, can't just endlessly receive snap benefits or medicaid.
