Quote from: Del. on August 26, 2025, 05:15 AMI've been watching White Collar on Netflix. FBI and high end art thief team up to catch white collar crime. Older show but very interesting that ran for 6 years.

One of my wife's favorites.

She especially likes the FBI guys wife. Best cop wife ever.

Del.

Untamed on Netflix is very good. Only 6 episodes in season one.

We've been watching House of David on Prime. It's been good so far. I think even an athiest could still enjoy it as mythology.

Started watching season 7 of Black Mirror. The first one is pretty damn good.

We watched the new remake of Frankenstein on Netflix last night. I thought it was pretty good, worth a watch.

Also started Season 4 of The Witcher. The reviews for the new season hadn't been kind. Most people really didn't like Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill, and I'd agree Cavill was the better witcher. But after getting used to the new Witcher I thought it was pretty good. I think if you liked the first 3 seasons you'll likely think the 4th is OK too.

I started reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein a while back. I was surprised at how different it was from all the movies. Frankly, I didn't like it. The one preview I've seen looked like it took place in the arctic, sort of like the book started out. If it does follow the book, I don't think I'll watch it.

You read the original Frankenstein from 1818? From my limited experience, books that old don't translate very well. I tried reading Last of the Mohicans, which was written in 1826 I think. I didn't get very far. It was barely recognizable as English. But I thought the movie was great.

Since I haven't read the novel I can't comment on how closely the movie follows the book. I thought it was a good movie. You may disagree.

A few things;
In the book, there is no castle and lightning.  There is no Igor. No "It's alive!" moment. He puts the creature together in his apartment.  When the creature opens his eyes, Frankenstein is so disgusted that he runs out of the apartment. He is "sick" for months, depending on a friend to take care of him.

I also tried the original Dracula. I liked it better. It's a lot like a Stephen King novel, but it got old; it would take Van Helsing three pages just to say hello.

I didn't have any trouble understanding the language. If you read any Jane Austen, it's not much different than that.

Then I would confirm the movie is not extremely faithful to the book, for what that's worth.

than that.

That's probably a more accurate description than mine. Reading it was tiring.

I've enjoyed a few graphic novels in my days, for sure. But in this case I'll let somebody else do the tiring translation of the book and just enjoy the movie.

James Fenimore Cooper was a little wordy. Mark Twain had some less flattering descriptions of him.

Personally, I loved the whole Leatherstocking Tales series.

I just finished watching "Untamed" on Netflix. I thought it was very good. A couple of hiccups but, for the most part, it was excellent.

The Last 600 Meters

You can rent it ($2.99) or buy it ($3.99) from Amazon Prime

It was filmed in 2007, but PBS sat on it for 18 years.
Guess they need the money now.
It's fitting that they released it 11/10/25, the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps.

from CoPliot
QuoteInitial Rejection: PBS declined to air The Last 600 Meters for years despite Pack's history of producing nationally broadcast documentaries for them.

Controversy: The film covers the 2004 battles of Najaf and Fallujah, two of the deadliest and politically sensitive battles of the Iraq War. Its raw portrayal of combat and politics may have contributed to PBS's hesitation.

Eventual Broadcast: After years of delay, PBS finally aired the documentary on November 10, 2025.
