"Yes, Venezuela has significant reserves of rare earth minerals, though they remain largely undeveloped. The country is believed to hold substantial deposits of rare earth elements (REEs), particularly in the southern region known as the Orinoco Mining Arc. These minerals are critical for manufacturing advanced technologies such as electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense systems."

I lived in Venezuela as a boy. My dad worked for a US oil company there in the early 60's
At some point after we left all the oil companies were nationalized.
My dad went back in the late 80's as a consultant for the government owned oil company.
He said corruption was rampant. If he needed 10k feet of drill rod, he had to order 40K feet
because a bribe was required at every stop along the way.
Kidnapping was a big thing there. He lived in a guarded hotel and had armed escorts whenever he went anywhere.
One morning is escorts picked him up and he noticed they were not going the right way.
He asked what was going on and the head escort said, we're going to the airport and you're getting on a plane.
There was a contract out for him to be kidnapped.
He got on a plane to the states and never went back

Here's Johnny!

I was there in the early 90's. Every sign on the highways were shot to bits from automatic rifles. Subway system in Caracas was outstanding but you literally needed to hold onto your wallet so it didn't get pickpocketed.

The old part of Caracas was designed as a labyrinth.

I wouldn't go back!

When I lived there it was near Lake Maracaibo.
They pumped so much oil out of the ground the land had sunk to 30 ft below sea level.
Lake Maracaibo is really a large bay, and there was a dike from sea to sea keeping the water out.
Even as an 8 year old boy, I thought that was nuts.. but that was 60 years ago and as far as I know, the dikes
have never failed.
The other thing I remember is the roads. They were little 2 lane roads barely wide enough for one car
When ever someone died in a crash, they'd put a cross up... and the sides on the road were totally lined with white crosses.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Well, with our stellar record of government building I don't even see a downside to that.

And a big  :flipbird: to all the "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it" people out there! :realmad:

Did anyone happen to catch the reported amount of fentanyl coming from Venezuela on these boats "destined for the United States" that couldn't possibly make it to US shores?

I've never heard confirmations there were any drugs of any kind on those ships.

On a side note, Venezuela isn't known for being a big fentanyl producer.

I'm sure those are just bags of rice destined to feed the hungry in South Beach. :fun:

If those boats were indeed trafficking fentanyl that is destined for the US, who cares if the boats can make it there or not. If it stops drugs from coming to our country, I don't care where they get intercepted.

I'm just saying there is a lot of "alleged" and "if" associated with the destruction of those ships.

Not much of "confirmed."
