Quote from: gcode post_id=10489 time=1619886556 user_id=60I've decided to abandon this idea.
This machine is worth millions and the parts we run on it are huge
An accident could easily destroy the machine and even kill someone.
We don't have Vericut for this machine yet, we're running a new unproven
post and the operators have zero experience with the control.
Putting a Siemens control on this machine was an seriously stupid idea.
The people responsible for this stupidity have been fired, now we have to suffer
the consequences and make it work.
I think slow and careful is the best approach.

Quotethat's a million dollar fuckup

it could be a million dollar fuckup Monday morning if the part we're trying to run on it got crashed

This is the obvious thing to do.
Providing your siemens machine is configured and behaves exactly as you want think and expect it to.
Good job it's not a converted only one in the world bastardised ginger step child...
LoL

Indeed. I spent some time with one of the gurus at CGTech, and he taught me about configuring Vericut machines and controls. He taught me always to think "what does the machine do", and tweak Vericut to mimic the machine. Never change the machine to match Vericut. That advice has held well, through the many machines I have configured.

We don't have a Vericut machine for this machine
We never really needed one as most of the work we do on it is very simple.
I've been here 15 years now and can't recall even a minor crash.

Of course what we've got on it now it anything but simple.
It's a split case for a naval steam turbine, a half cylinder, 15k pound stainless steel casting, 300 hours of heavy
turning, grooving and undercut grooving, every cut an interrupted cut because it's a split case.
We've build this part before on this machine when it had a Fanuc control
and the boss's magic spread sheet put it there again.
We're going to pound our beautiful $1.5 million retrofit into junk on it's first job.
We've got a monster double column VTL that eats this part for lunch, but ..... :wallbash:
Life in the fast lane

A VC machine for this one will be a big job.
We'll have to make models and figure out the control.
I shouldn't have any trouble selling it to management, but it will be months
at best before we have something usable.

too long..

in fact, finishing my shift this morning is becoming a struggle.
I had to go walk the shop before I lost it, told somebody to FO and went home.

4 months ago I went 9  hours over on a programming job, yet improved
the historical cycle time by 30+ hours.
I just spent 2 hour researching my crime and writing a report about the
9 hour overage.
They sure know how to take the fun out of a job.

the goal used to be work till 70, this morning 67 ( Sept 2021) looks like a stretch

But I know 100% you're the real deal.
The really sad thing is management in your own building, don't  know.
If they did, they wouldn't put you through this shit.

I agree, gcode is the real deal, and I would like nothing better than to work next to the guy :)

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Tom at the first Vericut VUE I ever attended in Irvine. Good times.

Those idiots in charge have no idea what kind of resource they have at their facility, but Tom, I'm really saddened to hear it is wearing you down.

I'm in a similar bind at the moment, and it sucks :(

real deal for sure.
The fact is that Tom IS the reason management can kick back and play 'you missed a spot' games. And they know it on some level. Any lesser humans in that chair wouldn't last.

Hardly, there's guys here than can run rings around me...  before they've had their morning coffee

and they aren't doing it to only me.
Everybody in the organization from programmers to inspectors to burr hands has to file an overage report
if they exceed their allotted time to perform a task.
Our manufacturing manager spends so much time documenting yesterday's overages he does have time to
work on preventing today's overages.

Perhaps....just maybe....he needs to give a little more realistic times to people...
